Ok this goes back to that Sartre thread in which I had a debate with Pindar about Essence and how it precedes existence and how Sartre was wrong because "his work is his own refutation" for stating the opposite

. Ok well Pindar kind of convinced me that Sartre was wrong, but now I read the origin of that theory, in Plato's Crito(or something) and it's not a very convincing argument. Socrate's recollection theory looks illogical to me. If you accept that the apparatus of the mind holds memory then how can the soul recollect past knowledge?

What do you mean BP? Are you sure you're not taking rare plants? In any case you should explain it a little bit more because as you presented it, it seems logical to me.

If recollection of the soul is remembering things from before existence, and the brain holds all memory then how does the soul carry memory over to the brain? Plus Socrates' ways of proving this theory are about as believable as a magic trick.

You're talking about Croton (in honor to the cell companion of Socrates) or another book?
Aristole brought down all those metaphysic theories. Plato and his master were far too idealistic. This one of the results. The soul is part of the brain, all is the psique, appealing to the greek word. Psique means both, soul and mind. In that theory Plato said that your psique will abandon your body with that memory then you pass the river in Hades (I don't remember it's name) and finally you return in blank, you're the same but not the same. Though that part that you don't understand is easily explained as both mind and soul are the same thing. But from where did you got that the soul carries memories from past lives, that's not what I remember.

Well according to Socrates everything you learn from books or otherwise is simply recollection of things you ahve learned before you were born.

oh so its basicly reincarnation?, i belive in that, how you have a soul or whatever you want to call it that tranverses bodies for eternity. i also belive that some parts are not erased as you said, scraps of memory, bits of personallity, a strange kinship with items of past lives. yup, i believe i was egyptian in a past life (relying on evidence of dreams and how easily i seem to remember things involving egypt.) the same for rome (dreams, memories, knoledge) in both i think i was a warrior as since i was 3 years old i was fascinated with swords and war.
