Default For Your Viewing Pleasure: Peloponnesian War

    Hello all,

First, egad! who changed my forum skin? Don't mean to impune or insult anyone, but what's with the Snowflak "default" skin? I hate winter and I hate Christmas (the holiday!). I like neutral, soft on the eyes, unobstrusive skins. Though brown isn't my favorite color, the Guild skin is the best.

Anyway, to the point of the post:

For those interested in the "Peloponnesian War" and/or just interested in a bit of historical background regarding the approximate time period of RTW (really its pre-RTW). I reccommend setting your VCR or DVR to record a presentation by the historian, Victor Davis Hanson. The presentation is based upon his recent book, "A War Like No Other".

The first airing was today at 2 pm, but there will be two additional airings, later today (Saturday, 12/10/05) at 10 pm, and early Monday morning at 4:30 am.

I haven't yet read the book, but in the presentation Hanson does an excellent job of making real in a modern regard this ancient time period and war.

Also, if you have the bandwidth, it can be view *online*, just click the "Watch" link.

Hanson discusses the political circumstance, the technology, and the technological innovations, which all played significant roles in the war and its outcome. Tirenes, Calvalry, Armour, etc., Hanson gives a real 'sense' of how it all effected warfare. Quite fascinating for those, like myself, with only a cursory knowledge of the subject matter.

    Fascinating! Thanks for the info.

Is this on the history channel, or c-span 2?

    Ja Mata, Tosa.

The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storm may enter; the rain may enter; but the King of England cannot enter – all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement! - William Pitt the Elder
