    Default Happy St Andrew's Day

Today is St Andrew's Day, when we Scots do absolutely nothing to commemorate a Patron Saint who did not come to Scotland until he was several centuries dead and did nothing except have his cross appear over a battlefield...

Scratch that, we did do something, we read Scots literature in English, were told by the teacher of said subject why we should be proud to be Scottish (which included Scotland spawning more geniuses than any other nation except Switzerland and the Jewish Nation, and a great many other things which make me proud to be Scottish), and told that we should not like the National Anthem (God Save the Queen) because the first line of the second verse reads "Crush the Rebellious Scots" (which is codswallop, since it is the former fifth verse which read "Rebellious Scots to Crush", was added during the Jacobite rebellious with due cause, and omitted not long after), and various other such things...

All the schools in regions ran by the SNP (there are not many) had today off as well as the two days previously...

which included Scotland spawning more geniuses than any other nation except Switzerland
At the risk of sending the thread wildly off course, only Rousseau comes to mind, and he worked outside Switzerland anyway? Including people who happened to be in Switzerland you could of course have Einstein (at the risk of double counting for the Jews although how Einstein could be said to be part of a Jewish "Nation" I am not too sure) and Nietszche though personally I think that's marginal on the genius front.

Come on you Swiss, step up and prove you have more geniuses than the Scots !!

Anyway your Majesty if it makes you feel any better I noticed it was St Andrews day this morning, not that it mattered as I am appalled to note that the St Andrews day Wall game http://www.etoncollege.com/eton.asp?di=197 is no longer played on St Andrews day at all, but on a convenient saturday, honestly, whatever next?

Not intentionally. The little rant part came as a side thought which I ended up typing...

    Aye up the Jocks !!!
There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

Bah, St. Andrew's Day. Proud of my heritage, I am, but bollocks to St. Andrew and his cloud-shaped omens.

Exactly! Someone more meaningful, like Queen St Margaret, St Columba, St Mungo, or some other saintly figure

That Mungo certainly has a fine name.

I'd rather drink to Alba than to some Catholic who showed up and converted a bunch of people who were already perfectly fine with their own religion.
