Liberalism strives for maximized liberty; it gets fuzzy when you talk about how that liberty is secured. One can have conservative ideals and be a liberal, e.g. someone may beleive promiscuity is bad while allowing others to be promiscuous. The only point I would make is find the political and social views of the world that fit how you think and feel. Allow yourself to grow and mature in the way that makes you feel good about yourself (the rest of us are not important) - the overall philosophy you must take in life is the one that makes you who you want to be.
As for the unflatering ways of conservatives - there are many of them. Just like there are unflatering ways of those who have any philosophy. If you take the extreme positons in everything - you end up not liking yourself in the end.
Now when you debate your idealogue views - many different things can happen - you might take the hard line stance, or you might even soften your view in the discussion. In the end it is you who must be happy with your outlook on life, politics and society - not anyone else.
