Actually I believe the situation was more like the secular world of today. On the surface tolerant/uncaring but beneath to an extent disliking of it. Much like we as persons might have a friend that has what we consider a bad habit we dislike, but we don't bother losing that friend over.

Edward II was desposed and killed in a pretty gruesome way because of his homosexuality, wich I won't describe here.
Also if I recall my reading correctly, one of the accusations against the Templars that led them to be disbanded was homosexual practices amongst their members (the real reason of the disbanding of course, being the greed of the Pope and the French king)

Sodomy was also one of the sins that got tacked onto the list of anyone you were trying to villify back then, along with witchcraft, murder, heresy, blasphemy, consorting with devils, fornication, perversion, disrespecting the Virgin Mary, forgetting the Pope's birthday, singing out of tune . . . .

I think it's fascinating how accusing someone of something they had actually done never seemed to be enough. 'If we accuse them of every sin we can think of then they must be guilty!'

The general ignorance of the people would make it believeable. Imagine their position on it. "All those big guys say all that. They wouldn't make such outrageous claims if they weren't true." The 'too wierd to be wrong' effect.
Or the general population was fairly bright and said "Hmmm that is a lot of bull, but if so many claim so much something must be right." The 'shotgun' effect.
