The general ignorance of the people would make it believeable. Imagine their position on it. "All those big guys say all that. They wouldn't make such outrageous claims if they weren't true." The 'too wierd to be wrong' effect.
Or the general population was fairly bright and said "Hmmm that is a lot of bull, but if so many claim so much something must be right." The 'shotgun' effect.
