So is shogun total war worth buying when you have medieval already? Sorry for the quick thread but I don't really have anything else to say.

I think it is, there's some cool vids for the ninjas, the music is nice, and the gameplay is great. There is a STW mod for VI, but its still being developed, altho I have played a couple of campaigns and its very nice.

    Fog.

Nothing quite like playing in the fog knowing that somewhere out there is a couple of monk units hunting down your ashis.
Our genes maybe in the basement but it does not stop us chosing our point of view from the top.

Yes, it's worth buying. The engine is almost identical to MTWs, so you will feel right at home but the content is sufficiently different to make it worth buying.

STW has more "chrome" and flavour than MTW - e.g. videos of your ninjas making kills or being killed - which makes it fun for a while. The music and voicework etc are very immersive.

The gameplay is more brutal, IMO. The strategic layer is a merciless bar room brawl - total war indeed - whereas with MTW you have more options and can have a more peaceful existence. Personally, I find the strategic layer of STW gets a bit tiresome - river chokepoints are very prevalent and there is the "Hojo horde" problem - but it makes for a more challenging experience (I've played for days and eventually given up as my conquest becomes stalled in WW1 style bloodbaths).

The tactical layer is "cleaner" than MTW. There are fewer units, with a stronger "rock-scissors-paste" character. I actually like the battlefield graphics for STW better and some of the maps (e.g. Shinano) are amazing. I recall being ambushed by the AI in STW battles, which does not tend to happen in other games so much.

Like MTW, there's a lot of replay in the game. About six different factions, with MI three different start dates. Ultimately, I prefer MTW and RTW (with RTR) but Shogun is definitely worth the money.

    Hi Gtafanboy,
Yes (MTW has got nothing on STW)

Shogun would be a sound investment IMO, you can pick it up dirt cheap on EBAY. You could get Shogun Total War: Warlords Edition, which contains the original Shogun plus the Mongol Invasion expansion, with some other gameplay improvements.

I haven't played Medieval or VI yet (have brand new copies ready for Xmas ), but the gameplay differences I've found between RTW & BI to Shogun & MI are quite outstanding. At least with Shogun, the AI will make you think more about troop deployment and positioning, rather than just charge straight at you in an over extended line with no reserves (usually the enemy general in RTW is the first unit to attack etc ).

The first thing I find myself doing in Shogun is surveying the battlefield, no matter if i'm attacking or defending. Trying to spot potential ambush spots, finding a key ridge for missile units to hold, paths that will outflank your enemy, but at the same time minimising fatigue on your own troops, and so on.

Currently developing Rome: Total Gameplay (RTG), an unofficial mod for vanilla Rome: Total War v1.5

Features: improved battles, new units to recruit, more buildings to construct, a modified campaign map, and much more!

I own them all. Apart from BI.
I wont mention RTW after this cos i never seem to have anything good to say,

    so il start with MTW,

MTW is great if you have vi Theres even more time periods in the campaign and More units to play with,
Compare with STW the campaign map is magnificent, It has much better tax management and its larger,
MTW is my fave Sp TW game,

STW. is a bit basic when it comes to the campaign.
Taxes get set for all your provices at 1ce,
so high tax in awa means high tax Everywhere.
Which means you Must have enough men on each province or be forced to have less taxes. (makes unit deployment a little bit more difficult).
you cant zoom in on the campaign map or the battle map.
The sprites arent The best But are definatly more than adequate,
There arent all that many units to chose from though.
But we are gaining a small Mp comunity these days,
so theres always a possibilaty of a game if you know who to ask,
Im one to ask. Then theres drisos and otto seems to play very often, paolin plays at times Not to infrequently either. There are more who come play, Some more often than others,
The best thing about STW is the battle feels i would say,
With no catapults or sige equipment, long ranged battles are taken down to musket fire,
(these things are powerfull and many disslike them But they can be beaten Even how they are, Although Skilled players May show you that Its more dificult han you imagined)
The STW Ai isnt that great either, It is an agressive little feller, But seems to be oblivious about his men being shot.
The weather in STW Is great, if its Heavy rain You know its heavy rain,
If its heavy fog, You can easily loose your men and the battle Due to the fact you cant see squat,
Theres are Blizzards But its not often people fight in winter,
I guess i like STW becous it has no siege equipment,
STW Is my FAVE TW mp game.

Perosnally I would buy STW/WE. But i am a little Biast towards my beloved Shoggy.

"i love my shoggy poos, Oh yes i dooo, Who loves you Lil shogy wogy wogy, Oh yes I love you *Polishes shoguns belly with a very soft Cloth stolen from some 1's glasses case*"

although if you play long enough you know all the battlefields inside and out and can always pick your ground, which may be a problem for RTW players. the economics are easier, the battles are still great (apart from that thing with the reinforcements...MTW has that sorted, thankfully) and i never tire of the cutscenes(and miss them now i play MTW, sniff), especially the rarer Geisha ones. it's a great challenge taking a level 2-3 daimyo and getting him to level 6 by winning 30-odd consecutive battles before he kicks the bucket! or by fielding armies made entirely of battlefield ninjas or monks. i'd say it's worth it, especially with the Mongols to add-on.
