Kats or Porn Allergy?

That is the question. I like Kats' armor, durability and affordability, but their sloth-like speed is really starting to get on my nerves. Porn is faster, but more expensive and less durable.

Now, this is in Late, so no Byz Lancers fer me (boy, I love those guys).

Anyhow, what's the general opinion, who is better, Kats or Porn?

Hehe took me a while to figure out what Porn meant. I'd definitely go for the proinoi(sp?) allagion though if you can afford them, they're some of the best cavalry available anywhere.

I think this get's a nomination for mistype of the year!

I use Kats as a last ditch kind of thing. Just keeping a single unit behind the lines and if things get really hairy, Lancers breaking your line apart of somesuch, charge them in. Even with the negative factors from being packed in with your other troops, they usually clear the line of it's problems.
The Pron I use as normal heavy cavlary. Engage other heavy cav, flanking attacks etc.

one is not better than the other, they're different and therefore used for different purposes.

Kataphraktoi have great defense, but are a bit on the slow side, so I think they're best used defensively, to block and hold flanks or plug holes in the line. For blocking flanks I set them 2 deep on Hold Form and they'll just stand there and keep the side door closed. Put them 3-4 deep and they'll plug any hole in the line, usually holding even if the infantry gives out around them. They make great gens, and can also be good for a simple frontal smash.

Pronoiai are essentially Feudal Knights with a lower charge. They're great for flanking, skirmishing, and can handle most of the Muslim Cav and hold their own with Catholics.

A good Byz army has both (plus some Byz Cav to shoot and some Lancers as light cav). Use them in their appropriate role and they'll do pretty good.
