    Default Virtues

Revising for a philosophy exam, looking at virtue ethics. I got bored.

    Anyway.

Here's a list of virtues out of my textbook - there's more around, but not listed.

Pick your top four - just out of interest.

Benevolence, civility, compassion, conscientiousness, cooperativeness, courage, courteousness, dependability, fairness, friendliness, generosity, honesty, industriousness, justice, loyalty, moderation, patience, prudence, reasonableness, self-discipline, self-reliance, tactfulness, thoughtfulness, tolerance.

For me, it'd be courage, loyalty, reasonableness and self-reliance.

I'd make this one of them mulitipoll thingys; but I can't be bothered to work out how at the moment - exam in 45 minutes etc.
Don't have any aspirations - they're doomed to fail.

    Rumours...

Dependability. Not in the sense that people depend on you constantly, but that if they've got problems they know they can talk to you about it and know you'll have time to hear them.

Honesty. I've rarely seen a lie work better than the truth, and it's something I admire in people.

Patience. The ability to keep at something even if it's not going well, without trying to rush things gets work done better in the end.

Tolerance. It's not necessary to always agree, but at least be willing to listen to what others have to say.

An interesting question on the topic, do you believe the virtues you admire most apply to you, or do you actively aspire to achieve them?

probably these 4, in no particular order :

    Tolerance
    self-discipline
    Tactfullness
    Honesty

though it was kind of hard to pick 4, not that Im a perfect person - or anything like that - but it is hard to put some above the others.

    Some may recognize these:

    (Duty and) Loyalty
    Justice (and Morality)
    Honesty (i.e. Complete Sincerity)
(Polite) Courtesy, (or, as listed: "courteousness")
    Compassion
    (Heroic) Courage

Chu, Gi, Makoto, Rei, Jin, Yu.
Only one is missing from the provided list and this classic set--Meiyo. Ironic, that.

I add Benevolence, which encompasses many of the other virtues listed, imo, and since this thread asks for our "top four," I would select also: Honesty, Compassion, and Loyalty.
    Be intent on loyalty
While others aspire to perform meritorious services
    Concentrate on purity of intent
While those around you are beset by egoism

I have a few not on the list..

Intellegence, self-confidence (but not to a detrimental degree), charisma, and a certain degree of insanity.

I didn't know how to think of this other than by thinking of the traits I'd like to find in a friend. Of the list provided, they are Courage, Honesty, Loyalty and Self-Discipline.

Intelligence and charisma isnt virtues, they are attributes rather. Insanity is a vice.

    1. Compassion - I wasn't sure whether to pick this or generosity, but either way you've got to love others as you love yourself.

    2. Honesty - Tell the truth. 'Nuff said.

    3. Prudence - The ability to choose what's right/good/best.

    4. Courage - For when doing the right thing isn't easy.
If you define cowardice as running away at the first sign of danger, screaming and tripping and begging for mercy, then yes, Mr. Brave man, I guess I'm a coward. -Jack Handey

    Courage-standing by what's right
    Honesty-standing by the truth
(though I prefer 'integrity,' which I think is a similar but broader concept)
    Loyalty-standing by your friends
Compassion-standing by the weak, needy, or unfortunate

I base my spiritual well-being on the 8 Virtues and Three Principles of the Ultima game series. If I had to pick the top four, it would be...

    Compassion
    Sacrifice
    Honor
    Valor

that's why aristotle argues for the mean, the golden middle way. Every virtue will not work if it is in excess or tool little.
