This sounds like a good idea, albeit the cost being quite high, and even if Bush's brother is involved and some evangelist who owns the "Washington Times"

We work to live, and to live is to, play "Total War" or drive a VR-4
Why? So the Eskimos can mush their sleds thru it?![]()

As Rev. Sun Myung Moon describes it, the tunnel would be both a monument to his magnificence, and a totem to his prophecy of a unified Planet Earth. In this vision, the United Nations would be reinvented as an instrument of God's plan, and democracy and sexual freedom would crumble in the face of this faith-based glory.![]()
The Washington Post is pretty liberal, while The Washington Times does not appear to be so.![]()
They're two pretty desolate areas. Maybe the goal is to make them more popular though. It may be convinient for the two immediate places, but it's not like the chunnel, IMO.
oops. "Washington Times" not Post

What a great idea to connect the thriving economies of Nome, Alaska, and Kamchatka! Wait a minute...do these places even have economies?
What a useless idea, especially since it seems to pander to that fool's ego.

Ja Mata, Tosa.
The poorest man may in his cottage bid defiance to all the forces of the Crown. It may be frail; its roof may shake; the wind may blow through it; the storm may enter; the rain may enter; but the King of England cannot enter – all his force dares not cross the threshold of the ruined tenement! - William Pitt the Elder
It's really just a plot by the Chinese. They'll quietly invade Siberia and sneak up on the US through the new tunnel when the time is right.

The fact that this guy is willing to pay for such a stupid project is indication enough of his insanity...
pure and utter stupidity, if they wanna waste 200 billion dollars, hell give me some.
dont know a lot about the russian city, but a few tidbits about nome, alaska for ya.
The City of Nome was incorporated on April 9, 1901 and operates under the Council-Manager form of government. The Nome Common Council consists of 6 elected officials and a Mayor, as the presiding officer.
45 full time employees, supplemented with seasonal employees, serve 3,505 Nome residents. The 2004 General Budget is $7.9 million, and the Port budget is $671,000. The 2004 mil rate for Nome is 11 mils, and the City has a 5% sales tax (as of October 10, 2003) as well as a 4% hotel/motel tax.
The Nome Joint Utility Systems, owned and operated by the City of Nome, serves the community with electrical, water, and sanitation services. The Nome Public Schools also operates under the City, providing the children of Nome with a first class education in grades Kindergarten - 12th.
Nome is the hub of the Seward Peninsula region. Local, State, and Federal government services provide the majority of employment. Retail services, transportation, mining, medical and other businesses provide year-round income.
and now for the most relavent fact for this bridge decision, their are only two ways in and out of nome, air, and sea. thats it their road system doesnt connect to anything.
the nearest city that connects to alaskas highway system is fairbanks, ak and if memory serves me correctly thats a 800 to 900 mile straight shot, a highway connecting them would be longer, because the terrain between the two cities has mountain ranges, rivers, bogs and marshes that would need to be avoided in the highway plan...

O well, seems like 'some' people decide to ruin a perfectly valid threat. Nice going guys... doc bean
another point that makes me question this, is alaska is in an earthquake zone, we have an average of one a day up here at least, most are minor, but what if another big one hits, what will that do to the tunnel

Therapy helps, but screaming obscenities is cheaper.
