    Default Mucho popups

The org seems to be infected, I get a lot of popups, and only when I visit the org. The anti-spyware doesn't find anything, anyone else having problems?

I have been getting the occasional pop-up of ad.yieldmanager for some weeks now, but it is very rare. The odd thing is that this pop-up does not occur at the university, but does at my home computers (which have multiple anti-spyware/pop-up programs installed.

EDIT: I just posted that, went to the forum index, and then I get a message that a pop-up is blocked . I am at the university, BTW.

I've noticed this for about the last month or so. I have spyware/pop-up blockers/etc.

I've been getting (occasionally) popups that are blocked by firefox. When I allow them through, they are small, in the top-left quandrant of my screen, and are "Telefragged." I'll see if I can get a pic. Not too annoying, since firefox blocks them, but still...

Something like IE...or a lack of firefox extensions...you didn't mention your browser.

Sorry, Firefox user here. What do you mean by firefox extensions?

It seems to block most of them, but once in awhile I get some. I usually close them too quickly to pay attention to what kind of ads they are, but I'll try to take a screenshot next time it happens. They seem to come in waves.

First pop-up in months appeared in my IE6 today: upside-down mustard-yellow triangle asking if I'd take a survey. Advert-makers keep getting smarter.

Add-ons you can get from their site (there's one that blocks almost all banner ads, one for saving your session so it comes up on the same page after a crash, etc).

Even with Firefox you can get popups from: embedded windows media player files (I still get these), flash programs (this is fixed in my firefox, I know it was a problem in older versions), spyware/malware (AIM comes with programs that create popups, installing Aim AdHack or one of the other fixer programs will got rid of that. Most spyware programs won't find everything, changing your settings so that all hidden files are shown and file extensions are shown can help them, as well as running multiple programs.

Do you know if the popups open in a firefox window or a IE window?

I'm not an expert, this is more of an Apothecary topic.

I started getting a bunch of blocked ones on this site today...so I did my MS security updates. All gone now.

I really think that we should start an international Darwinian system for dealing with new types of pop ups, virus writers, etc. I propose having 365 day/year open season on them. Limit the weapons to non-projectile hand wielded instruments. That would make for a particular fitting end for them...as it could take awhile to bludgeon them to death...sort of like eradicating a chain of pop-ups. I think we could end the problem in a few weeks.

Get Maxthon Browser.. www.maxthon.com (used to be referred as MyIE2)

Much less buggy, highly functional, highly secure, highly high on speeds, highly sounds as if I'm the developer.. Ehm.. Well, I can not write two lines of code after each other..

If you're looking for extensions and plug-ins FireFox is the choice. But whoever tried Maxthon for sometime, could not stop using it.

The only solution is to hunt them all down and give them a goooood beating (not to death). But that would mean that a lot of antivirus programmers would get fired.

I use Firefox here and IE at the university. IE blocks them but Firefox appears not to do so. Which extensions would you recommend?

Interesting. I just installed AdBlock, ran Spybot S&D and AdAware, and then I ran SpywareBlaster. And I'm still getting pop-ups on the Org. Also running Firefox 1.5. Oh, the unfairness of it all ...

I dont know what You people expect from free programs.....
pay a few $ and get something worth having.

I mean When did you hear me complain about Probs with viruses popups spy ware or anything of the sort?

I dont say free progs are useless, But to me they arent far off,
I have 2 progs fully payed for,
Kerio personal fire wall (you can get it for free 2)
    and Pestpatroll.
Then i have a free virus scanner AVG,
The whole lot dint cost me that much, And the amount of peace of mind they give me is worth every penny.

I dont expect you to rush out and buy these progs,
But id definatly Try kerio personal fire wall Free edition for a while if i were you,
After a month the free version stops blocking popups and adds and stuff,
But atleast you will know what i mean by then.

and if you do get it,
Install it in ADVANCED "learning mode"

That way it asks you is this safe?
And you get to tick a box and say yes or no.

For people who are on a network If your hosting the network. (ICS) "internet connection sharing", unfortunatly you would need the full version. you must enable gateway mode for ICS to work, And thats not an option in the free version.
Although clients on the network could have the free version installed just fine.

    Pestpatroll however is retail.
so if i were you and wanted free progs to fix it,
    id start with kerio.

With software the old "you get what you pay for" saying is perhaps inverted. Many of the BEST tools are free. For example: the worst virus scanners I've used were the big for profit ones. The easiest to live with and most stable one I've used is free. It might not be perfect, but unlike MacAfee and Norton I've never had it take down a machine I was using and force me to reformat. Nor does it suck up resources like mad.

well ive tried all the free spy ware progs and they suck

I said that I use AVG Free, So thats not in question,
But seeing as were on old sayings.

"Dont knock it till youve tried it,"

and in adition I would not Recomaned other fire walls,
    Profit or non profit.
Kerio is easy to configure, Almost idiot proof, and does most of the stuff for you.
Provided you install it in advanced mode, It wont prevent you doing things you wish to do,

and if any 1 at the org happend to need help configuring the thing (which i doubt)
Im prety shure Every 1 knows all you need to do is ask and im more than happy to help, No matter who you are.

    Ok
Guaranteed that was my last edit.

Getting popups with vanilla Firefox is weird as it is. I don't even get a popup blocker notification with Mozilla proper, which means no popups are hitting. Adblock is just for removing the host's annoying ad. (Disable it when before you go to the arcade.)

I recommend downloading Microsoft AntiSpyware from their site, rebooting to safe mode/Administrator, doing a full check and then doing another full check with AdAware.

Thanks. Anyway, I discovered I was using Firefox 1.07, not 1.5! Somehow the program failed to inform there was an update everytime I checked...

Thanks for the tips, Sasaki and Mouzafphaerre.

I've now updated to FF 1.7, got the adblock extension and a cool looking theme for the browser. So far the adblock seems to be doing the trick.

Don't forget to turn off AdBlock when you go to the arcade. The stupido blocks most of the games.
