problems unlocking factions

If you download and install a mod, you need to make sure that you install it over a 'clean' version of whichever TW game you're playing. If you've already modded the descr_strat text file, and then attempt to install a mod over the top of it, you will problem encounter similar problems to the ones you've faced, such as a crash on the imperial campaign screen.

If you intend to mod your copy of RTW, MTW, or whatever, create a backup copy of the entire TW directory folder (or selected text files to save time and space). This way, you can refer back to an original unmodified copy if you encounter any problems.

As mentioned, I would completely uninstall and then reinstall the TW game your playing just to be safe. Make a backup copy of the original folder after reinstallation, then mod your game however you like

Not sure about MTW, but here is a mod that will unlock all factions for RTW v1.3 and BI v1.4

There's probably some MTW mods in this thread.
