Thread: Attacking town CTD

    Default Attacking town CTD

Hey. I'm having a problem with my campaign map.
It includes three factions, and one of them starts out as a horde. All the text files are correct and so are the .tga images. But when I hit the next turn, it CTD.
And also, when I attack a slave town with my horde faction leader, the game crashes. Does anyone have an idea of what might cause the crash?
Btw, the three factions are empire east, sassanids and franks.

    Thanks,

    Tittils

Are you using -show_err? The game will give you a prompt where it finds something it doesn't like in the text files, cycling through one at a time if there's more than one problem. However, sometimes if there are simultaneous errors in the text, -show_err won't appear.

Thanks, but I use the show_err, but it only shows errors when you get kicked back to the menu. It doesn't show up on CTD.
I've tried a lot of things, but I can't seem to get it work.

With non error message CTD's there is not much that you can do.Try to check files again and see - sometimes one comma in the wrong place makes all the difference

Otherwise, this a bit tricky ...you could always try to download Windows Debugging Tool.It helped me to solve CTD problem with Mundus Magnus version 2 map for RTW 1.3

I don't know how to use the Windows debugging tool.
but anyways, the problem seems to be rebels related. If I look at my town and that town doesn't rebel, I can get past turn 1, but when I try to move my camera over one of the towns that has rebelled, it CTD.
Does anyone know what would cause this kind of problem?

Funny enough Mundus Magnus bug was also related to rebel unit without "slave" tag in export_descr_unit.No message woiould come out -just black screen crash. It could something t do with rebel's units AI spawn.Check your descr_rebel_factions

As for Windows Debugging tool...it would work as long as RTW crash leaves some sort of "dump" file in Windows Temp folder. That file can be read by this program and there are (usually) some lines that give a clue what went wrong and why crash occured.

I had a problem like that when I missed adding a entry in the expanded.txt file for rebel cities....

    ok, thanks.
    What entry had you missed?
Btw, RTW isn't leaving a dump file in my temp folder
I could play a battle against rebels with sassanids, but for empire east it crashes after turn one when some cities rebel.

This is that tricky bit because they are not always there. When general fault message appears, you need to leave on the screen, exit RTW (through alt+ctrl+del) and go go to c:/docs&settings/user name/local settings/temp,right click to arrange icon so you know what files are the latest and try to open them with Windows Debugging tool. They are not exactly called "dump" files -I can't remember what file extensions they are.

Ok, thanks. But when this happens, it crashes right to the desktop, so I can't leave RTW on screen.
    I'll do some more testing

Finally solved. I changed all the default factions in descr_regions to franks, and now it works! This probably has some connection with the way rebels are spawned. This is very weird.
    Anyways, it is solved now.
    Thanks for your help guys:)

    Glad you have solved that

This "spawn" problem with rebels and mercenaries keep coming back.

    Well, it ain't completely solved.
I thought I should test it a bit more, and now it crashes after the second turn when my capitol rebels. There is no logic in this CTD. It worked with another map I had using the exact same files, except that this map is smaller (fewer regions), so I've no idea what would cause a problem now.

This is when I thought things have really gone wrong. The whole problem was...texture path in descr_model_battle didn't have reference to mercenaries.

You can read DMP files with MS Word or even Word Pad.Maybe you will find the clue there to why you get CTD.I still think there some problems with certain rebel units being spawn.

BTW if you CTD again and want to read contains of DMP file, end RTW Dr.Watson (some like ddrwin.exe) in the Task Manager.Otherwise DMP will not be saved

Thanks man, but the only file I get in my temp folder is the "~e5.0001" file when R:TW - BI starts up. I don't have a ddrwin file in my task manager either. This problem is really starting to bug me. A shame I don't get that DMP file

Since it loads the campaign and works for one turn...if you don't actually play, but exit ou of the game, do you get anything from -show_err? With some of the supposed errors the game can still do somethings just fine...or it might load but CTD later.
    Rome Total War, it's not a game, it's a do-it-yourself project.

    Nope, no show_err message.
It definately has something to do with rebels spawning. It's weird though, becaus the exact same rebel files worked in a campaign which this one uses the files from. It doesn't make sense!

Double check rebel units. There is got to be something in either descr_strat or descr_rebel_factions

I can play several turns now, but when I enter one specific rebel town after winning a siege battle, it CTD. Could it have something to do with hidden resources?

Attacking rebel town CTD solved. They had britain as a HR in descr_regions, and it was in the HR line in export_descr_buildings. When I removed Britain from both EDB and DR it worked. I've no idea how it could affect a rebel town in that way. It probably has something to do with the Romano British emergence, though the Romano British was disabled.
Anyways, I'm glad it's solved now
