Thread: Something missing from RTW

    Default Something missing from RTW

This has probably occured to most of you - but one of the things in real life that made the Roman Empire so great was their ability to learn from and absorb foreign cultures.

Another thing about the Romans was the large number of Auxiliaries they used. You can see these types of troops in BI.

Wouldn't it be great (and more realistic) if conquered territories allowed you to recruit "auxiliaries" of that nation's troop types from those areas? I don't think the Romans could train praetorians anywhere they wanted to in real life....maybe something like, you conquer a province, first 10 years, you can't train anything other than maybe town watch or something like that (or as long as there is "unrest" in the province I suppose) and after that you can start making for example, falxmen if you conquered a province in Dacia, horse archers if you conquered a province in Scythia, etc. etc....maybe only with a certain loyalty level could you train Roman style units....or different levels of Roman troops depending on the loyalty level to represent that province's "Romanisation" level....

I believe RTR uses some similar type of recruiting system, I haven't played it yet though.

Sorry if this has been posted before.

Something for the next Total War game?

Yeah, RTR has the Area of Recruitment (AOR) system, which is similar to what you are talking about, although the troops are available immediately. SPQR has a different take on it, with the gradual 'Romanisation' of provinces providing different troop types.

Going back to MTW, MedMod did this first (as far as I'm aware) - it certainly added new challenges.

I'd welcome this added level of detail to the 'vanilla' games, so hopefully whatever the next TW game is, it will have this feature.

Do you think the RTR team would ever look into releasing just parts of the mod available to download? By this I mean I would not like the whole modification, however this area recruitment concept seems very intruiging and something worth downloading.

I am afraid that AoR systems in R:TW are very specific. They only work if you have the same resources, units and buildings and since R:TR changed all that...

I would like it if the TW series started featuring an AoR system, but it would slow down the gameplay and R:TW seems to be designed to speed it up. :Sigh: Yet another item on my TW wishlist...

Another point sadly lacking in BI is the willingness of factions to fight their own people. The Huns are a good example. After their earlier conquests, their armies were swelled by numbers of Alans, Ostrogoths and others, yet they have no access to these troops. For years Aetius had used armies of Huns throughout Gaul and there was even a large contingent of Huns in the Gothic army at Adrianople. There are mercenaries for hire in BI but far less variety than I had hoped for

They could always made AoR optionable, as fatigue and ammo is. There`s lots of things they could have made optionable.
Reaching the masses is no excuse.
    Runes for good luck:
