Default We're going over the edge?

I think at times, this forum turns into a flame area for people to bash each other over politics...

The word 'politics' is derived from the word 'poly', meaning 'many', and the word 'ticks', meaning 'blood sucking parasites'...

Maybe we should tone it down? You decide...

When the debates continue long enough people usually understand each other better, and realize that there are only minor areas in which they disagree. I'm however not glad when debates end early, and both people look upon the other in fear over his political ideologies, who are in reality usually closer to the other part than it might seem at first.

I actually think the idea of discussing politics in written form has a huge potential, as there never becomes the same hate feeling as in a real life debate. People think through their answers better, and if they aren't controlled by prejudice learn new things about themselves by asking "why do I hold my opinion?". I've learnt much, and found it necessary to alter my opinions in several details as a result of discussions here. As long as the aim of the debate is to see possibilities of a solution that is true to all "whys", and not bashing over which opinion used at the start of the debate is better, then it can only be positive with these debates, I think.

Not at all, this is one of the most civil forums I've visited, any out of line comments are swiflty delt with by the mods and most threads that are geting out of hand are either closed or warned

Certainly I don't like it when threads fall into flame wars, but the nature of politics does lead to heated debates. I think that we are, on the whole, OK.

People come out and say this all the time about the backroom, but I've never seen it actually become a rude place for a month, then followed by a few civil weeks, then a flamefest for a couple days, then all of a sudden everyone breaks out their Emily Post guides.

There really isn't any fluctuation here. It's a forum where politics are allowed to be discussed, so they naturally dominate the conversation. Everyone knows politics are inherently stupid, so tit for tat and mild personal attacks at least keep them from being boring as well. If politics irritate you, just leave for a bit. I duck out for a week or so at a time fairly often and it helps me.

No, they don't bother me, I just wanted to see what you guys think and from what I've seen you obviously think it's okay, so don't change anything!

Well, it just made me think of the thread in the Watchtower where it's being discussed to close the br down for Christmas weekend. It doesn't bother me either way, since I'll be pretty busy with real life like most of us here, but what is it supposed to achieve? Do they expect people to show up on monday or tuesday with a much more clear headed and mature demeanor?

No, they just don't want to be bothered with our pranks and flames when they themselves are busy IRL.

It's generally fairly civil, and certainly informative to me. I just dislike it when debates turn to the minutae or posts repeat themselves a little way down the line; wordgames are inherently boring, at least to me. But mostly people make at least some effort here to stay polite and try to understand each other, certainly more than in some forums I've visited.

Oh, topics seem to be limited to certain subjects, which tend to devolve to a common point. That's boring, and gets people fed up of explaining their views very early on in repeating topics which is usually when things get insulting. So, be original people!

I need to express my sick & tired situation about that freakin' flame war (That can never progress to being better as long as it is that way) and that I'm generally pushed into such conflicts..

I'm with you LEN. And I also want to support political discussion in the Backroom for the sake of this world, discussion here is more productive than the UN at least (if any).
