Well Im not surprised at Texas really. After all, IIRC it was the only state of the Union that was previously a nation before addmittance (as opposed to one of the original thirteen or a created state of the union)

I thought Texans were a bunch of stiff-necked Brits (not stiff upper lip mind you) genetically enhanced by some special chemicals found only in Texas. An Englishman should do just fine.

Reinvent the British and you get a global finance center, edible food and better service. Reinvent the French and you may just get more Germans.

California was a sovereign nation for three entire weeks, before the US Navy insisted on hoisting its colours here . And don't get me started on the Kingdom of Hawaii.

But yeah, point taken, Texans, being large and from a large place, largely think large - and occasionally forget that anyone or any place else exists.

D'oh, how could I forget Hawaii?? I guess I meant one of the earlier states to join the Union...yea, thats what I meant...

I also thought that even most Americans didnt consider California's flirt with nationhood as actual nationhood?

Oh, look, Mildred...the Commonweal-ers are 'avin' a tiff.

So, back on topic, why did the Texan/US southwest mind-set of limitless frontier take such hold in the 19th century and forward, when, given similar geographic expanse, such mindsets didn't prevail in Canada or Oz?

My sincere apologies if this sends the thread to the backroom.

I think the Aussies and Canadians are more laconic in their attitudes. So big talk is frowned upon and action is given the silent nod. NATO ... No Action, Talk Only is not a good trait to have IMDHO.

In Aus the frontiers are so huge it is called the Tyranny of Distance... but I think you will find that the Texans fit in here at Aus pretty well, once they get over there Agoraphobia.
