Thread: Adding Buildings

    Default Adding Buildings

When I add buildings in descr_strat to a settlement in my Provincial Campaign and try to start the campaign, it always goes back to the Provincial Campaign screen and I am unable to select my campaign. I can change the level of the building, for example, I can change the governors villa to an imperial palace but I cannot add any building. I am going off of the export_descr_buildings.txt file so I have the format correct. Can anyone help me?

You've probably added a building that's inappropriate for your settlement level and RTW has failed to parse descr_strat.txt successfully. You need to start RTW using the show_err switch. If you do this, when you exit RTW a window will pop up showing you what went wrong.

Here's one place where usage of the show_err switch is explained:

I can't get the show_err thing to work...would you mind explaining how I type that in exactly? And I have the settlement as a huge city with an imperial palace so shouldn't I be able to place any kind of forum I want? Thank you for the help.

Never mind....I got it working. It was very odd though, the first two times the error that came up was that the onagers range was set to 300 and it said that the max was 293...I have never modded the onagers so I have no idea why that was. Even stranger though was that onagers work fine in custom battles, quick battles, historic battles, and the imperial campaign but not in mine...then after I fixed the onagers the error came up that I had a { instead of a }. Now I feel stupid....it is strange that I made the same mistake (or some mistake in adding a building) about 5 times in a row...anyway, thank you for all your assistance, I have one last question for you though, is there a maximum amount of buildings one settlement can have? Again thank you for all your help.

One more things, I am glad no one has posted yet, is there an order in which the buildings must go? I am pretty sure there isn't but it would be nice if someone confirmed this for me. Thank you!

Sorry but I keep thinking up more and more questions. Can a faction name be changed and if so how? Like could I change the Julii to Rome? So far everytime I try it doesn't work.

Highlight the RTW icon, right click and select properties. Target should be
    something like "C:\Program Files\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -show_err

If this looks right to you, try making a deliberate mistake in descr_strat.txt - I suggest misspelling a unit name. This will definitely trigger a show_err so you can tell whether it's working or not.

What you describe has happened to me any number of times and as I recall almost always generates a show_err.

Most, if not all the changes you want to make are in text\expanded_bi.txt. There are a lot of them so you want to search for ROMAN and JULII, probably.
