Thread: Instant Rams

    Default Instant Rams

I am playing WRE and am doing pretty well but all of the sudden the Hordes produce instant rams whenever they attack a fortification. What's with that? Has anyone experienced this before? I don't know if it is a bug or something that happens when you get to a certain point in the game. I think it is kinda cool in that now I have to actually defend my cities but I WOULD like to chose what cities to defend.

    Anyone else experience this?

Rams only take one turn (6 months) to build. So no not really a bug.

I think hes saying that the hordes are making rams and assaulting towns on the same turn

Yes. As soon as they lay seige they have a ram already built and they take the fortification. So far they haven't done it to a city yet but they haven't tried to take a city yet.

I was playing RTW 1.5 a few nights ago and sieged a town and immediately was offered the option to attack with 1 ram. I thought I had gone mad but now I am not so sure. Maybe under certain circumstances you already have siege gear. Anyone know about this?

A very good question...I'm wondering if rams can be "left on the field" to later besiegers?

Well in BI v1.4 I layed siege to a town, noticed I'd be in trouble if I did'nt lift the siege, took care of the nearby armies, came back to the town with a nice stack of siege equipment.

Did'nt think anything of it at the time, but from the sounds of it you can lay siege build the equipment then march your armie to a distant city and assault it right away.

That is very interesting, and would make for an odd nuance. Should be easy to test. Build gear, break a siege, then resiege. Also try beseiging a different city (perhaps it applies to only the intended target and not to other cities?)

In real life the logistical aspects of moving with siege gear seem highly improbable. Armies were not going to tote around a helepolis (with its earthen ramp ), or even a ram...or better yet...a sapping mine. They might bring along specialized pieces and tools to construct them, but the big stuff would be field constructed...or imported in sections after the siege was underway.

Think about it. One ram to knock down a gate on a fort could be built in a few hours, not months. So with that in mind, I would not consider it to be a "bug."

When they bring it on, have your archers in the fort use fire to shoot specifically at the ram. (That means it would make sense to have at least a small contingent of archers in the fort of course.) Burn up their ram, and they leave you alone for six months.

If on the other hand, you are besieging with that same ram, be sure that you have at least two units of archers shooting at THEIR archers, hopefully protecting your ram.

If I recall correctly, even when I had begun one siege in RTW, had built some
equipment but had the siege lifted, [possibly attacked by a reinforcing army,
only to march on the undefended city afterwards] I was able to move on and
use that equipment in another siege. Perhaps the army simply had previously
built equipment from another siege left over?

It has to be a bug, though perhaps it is a horde trait. I cannot do it, certainly.

Hmm, interesting. I just had this happen for the first time, it certainly does exist.
A town that had not previously been under seige was besieged by the Vandals. I checked the Vandal army units and there were no seige units. When I hit end turn I was attacked by the same Vandal army fielding 1 seige tower, 2 ladders and 1 ram. After I successfully defended, another Vandal army arrived the next turn and did exactly the same thing.
I'm not complaining though, as it makes it much faster to destroy their armies.
