When I was 18 I took passage on a narco-boat between Panama and Colombia and ended up marooned on a small Cuna island for most of a week. When we contracted a second boat and made it to the mainland, I went to the streets to celebrate Mardis Gras with my drunken Spaniard friends and we ended up being imprisoned by the National Police and deported from the country.

Actually I don't think he is very smart and if he knew the risks, he doesn't seem to have taken very many precautions. Learning a little Arabic might have been a good first step.

Good for him. Unlike any of us pontificating about how good or bad Iraq is, he went to see with his own eyes. God bless this young man. For those calling him a traitor, I believe that you should see that he, by his actions, put his life on the line voluntarily to get a first hand account on whether democracy or oppression will be the future of Iraq. I for one hopes that he continues his "see with my own eyes" approach and becomes an honest journalist. He has shown great resourcefulness and would be a great asset to the media. I've read several stories that say that the majority of the news reported from Iraq have been from journalists that stay in their hotel rooms.
A believe a democratic Iraq is the key to the future of the Middle East and the very fact that this young man has shown the courage to see and the desire to help the Iraqi people should be a lesson to us all, whether if you are for the war or against. Those calling him a traitor should feel shame, he is no more a traitor or a moron than someone slapping keystrokes on a computer opining on a young man braver than most with the courage to see and report what he sees.

More or less what I was thinking, DevDave. I was going to say something along the lines of "The young lad may have potential." It is, of course, not possible to say whether we have seen true potential which will develop and be realized, or mere impulsive foolishness-- but regardless, I would say that this boy's attitude and initiative are, in some ways, examples for us all.
SFTS's analyses are clouded by jealousy, and Alex of M's by the hope of his own adolescent dreams-- both of them are quite close in age to Farris.
