    Default Counter Strike: Source

So, having got Half-Life 2: Game of the Year Edition (which is damn fun), i also got numerous other things, most importantly CS:S. Having missed out on the original CS (it wouldn't work on my PC, hardware conflict or something), i finally managed to get into the upgraded version of it, albeit a year or so late.

It's one of the most addictive games i've played for a while. I got on it yesterday at about 20:55, and ended up playing till 22:45, not realising the passage of time.

Do any of you other guys play? If so, tell me your player names, and the servers you play on. My name is currywurry (this is the only forum where i've used a different name) and the main servers i play on are 'www.monsterserver.comOFFICE POWER' and the Via clan server.

I used to play the original a lot. The source version looks better but has serious problems with BSed head shots. Overall it is pretty good though. CS is very addictive. Have fun with it and don't over do it like me.

I'm more of a DoD: Source Fan... just wish they'd get more maps, it still doesn't quite compare in playability as the Original DoD, but even that took years to make really good.

I agree, DoD: Source is much better (I hate Counter-Strike). If you get that one for free, too, you should check it out.

I wasted many hours of my life playing the original CS. However, I have heard that the new one has serious bullet-spray pattern issues and HS issues.

As to the HS issues, i've not seen any yet. The only problem i have is occasionally shooting people at point blank range with a shotgun, but they don't die.

Explain this HS problem for the uninformed, all one of us.

Anyone who played CS for a long period of time develops some rather....hardcore habits around the game. Ermm...not the way you are thinking! Rather, one becomes intimate ( ) with the weapons and what they can and cannot do. As part of this research, you learn the bullet spray patterns of many of the weapons when fired on full auto. For example, the AK kicks up, so when you full auto, drag the reticle over the chest, downwards. The M4, in comparison, you strafe back and forth at around head level, since the spray tends towards horizontal, rather than vertical deviation.

In CS Source, the bullet paths (so I've heard) are screwed up. Anything remotely close to the head is a HS.

im a big CS:S fan as well. i play DoD:S too, but to me, no other game provides more exciting close quarters gun fights than CS:S does. people whine about hitbox issues in CS:S, but i really don't notice that much of a problem. the high probability of headshots and other hitbox strangeness is inherent to the source engine anways. the same problems occur in DoD:S. i play my fair share of both, but until DoD:S gets more than the same 4 boring maps, CS:S has been taking up most of my online FPS time.
    obviously, you're not a golfer.

HS aren't that bad in CSS (I play a fair bit). But the head hit box is outside the bounds of your avatars noggin though, a few milimeters (player scale not game scale) it seems to me. Also CSS has been patched like 5 times and the bullet sprays are the same as CS now. But it's a good online FPS, on a good day I can out gun M4 babies with my Galil. Mostly cause the hardest of hardcore CS players won't use the source version. Their loss, average skillz players like me, gain. I don't hav DOD:S yet. I plan on buying eventually. When I get my wifi lan set up and my own comp on the net I and my brother will be popping each others heads.

CSS is fun. Give me an AK47 and I'll kill half an hour on it. Doens't really lend itself to long play sessions too well.

I did when I was younger, but A Levels put more constraints on my time. Like pubs.

I can see how school would cut into your pwning bitches time. But in my house it's very convinient to play online for long periods. As my PC is in the kitchen, and the fridge is about 4 feet from where I typr this. Plus the bathroom is about 4 steps around the corner.

I can't really play more than an hour straight but with dod 1.3b I could of been on for up to 6 hours. Although A Levels are cutting into my addictions with WoW and Red Orchestra

cs and cs:s are both fun; the problem is the community. i've never seen such hordes of racist, immature twerps. i wouldn't believe such a disgusting community existed, if I hadn't experienced it myself.

10-18 yearolds+no rules+anonymity=your experience. Your best bet for not having to deal with that BS is to use a clans public server. Some may froun on 4 letter words but all try and remove whiners and racists.

lars, but that is true of many online games. I played quake A LOT back in the day, and while there was certainly some aggression release, there was not this constant, disgusting negativity. LAN is still quite fun, but there are just far too many angry young men in the cs community. People are constantly yelling and screaming at each other just for the sake of yelling and screaming. It's like a timewarp back to a high school boys' gym class, except 10x worse.

Honestly, I think valve needs to make a reputation system a la xbox live. Then servers could simply screen all individuals who have a too low rating. Otherwise, it's too hard to control the playing community. Unless you go private, but that does no good for the rest of us...

I've just going to repeat what most people say to this. What do you expect from a public server? The answer is extremely innaproreate behavior. People who want a nice friendly calm game play on private servers at arranged times. That's the long and the short of it.

    Post Re: Counter Strike: Source

I forgot how addictive CSS was...haven't played in a long, long time. Best thing about it (and the original CS) is that (with a bit of skill) you can use pretty much any weapon with efficiency, except perhaps for the shotty at long range Although the pump-action shotty packs a good punch and has decent range, but the auto-loading one is just spray-and-pray.

The problem with CSS is identifying the thin line between elite gamers and hackers. I've seen people using unscoped sniper rifles & aimbots and nailing headshots from a few hundred yards. Kind of sad tbh, even though AVG protection is in place in many servers, it just doesn't seem to catch them all. Mind you, once they catch you hacking, they'll take your Steam ID and give you a global ban...hardly worth it IMO.

Also played quite a few of the spin-off mods from the original Half-Life engine, but DoD had to be the best. IMO the DoD gameplay was better than the MOH series because of the superior choice of weapons, better teamwork, and wider variety of maps.

I got distracted by the surf mod recently, and then distracted from CS completely by Garry's mod. Heheheh, it's fun making various HL2 characters look like their jumping out of windows.

Halo is a different style of game...no fair comparing. Besides, UT will, in every iteration, always be a better multiplayer game than Halo.

There are still people playing UT99 (or Classic UT) online, me included Just goes to show that the true classics won't die for a long time.

There are still about 100-200 dedicated, deluded nuts, me included, playing Tribes 2, despite the fact that there is a problem with the auto-update feature that should be preventing us from playing. Further proof that true classics will never die.

Same applies to Alien vs Predator 2, which is still damn fun.

You might already know this, but if you open the CSS console in game and type in cl_smooth 0, you should notice an improvement in framerates. When I was playng CSS this proved invaluable since my system is low-end, and I can only generate around 30fps.

I know they have menus so that you can auto-buy weapons, pistols, armour, grenades etc, but I used to type the exact weapon load into the console, and it would automatically bind to the autobuy shortcut key. This really saved a lot of time at the start of a round. Think the console code was as follows:

cl_autobuy m4a1 primammo deagle secammo vesthelm hegrenade

which translated means an M4A1 & Ammo, a Desert Eagle & Ammo, Kevlar Vest & Helmet, High Explosive Grenade. This is just an example, obviously there are many more combinations than this.

You can find out the exact names of weapons by spectating and having the console open. Once people start killing each other, you will see 'Player X killed Player Y (or whatever) with Weapon Z', where weapon z will be the shorthand code for the weapon. EG SAW machine gun is M249.

I forget most of the shorthand codes, might have to reinstall CSS to find out...
