Two currently - the 'indo-greek hoplite' of which there are two skins (one merc and one baktrian); and the indian longbow unit, which has swords also.

Can't remember if there's an indian light horse unit in the works or not.

Doubtful if there will be a faction though, as the only one that would work is only partially on our map and we're determined not to try to represent only part of a people on our map.

Apart from the long range, do indian longbows have any other advantages? They have a 5 missile attack and a 350+ upkeep, whereas a slightly shorter range archer can be recruited or bought as mercenaries for a mere 155 a turn... In a vh/m campaign where i own 6 cities and can barely field half a stack without going into debt, and where i have the Seleukids north west knocking at my door with full stack armies which they should NOT be able to upkeep, and the Ptolemies at my south west ready to backstab me any turn now like they always do, why should i pay an extra 200 upkeep per turn for a unit just as good as one i can pay 155 for?

I think they had armour piercing? Not sure here though. Does the alternate Unit also have that? Or am i completely wrong?

But... 350 a turn... For that i could have two of the other kind with the same missle attack... And these other guys who's name i can't remember or prenounce or be bothered to go into the game and look also carry a massive spear as a secondary weapon making them not even that bad against light/medium cavalry... And lets face it when are your archers ever commited to melee against infantry? Only if a battle is lost anyway, on the other hand enemy cavalry always finds a way of getting at my archers so their huge spears really help...

BUT i will admit i've not even used the indian guys yet as i've been put off by their upkeep basically... What with me being poor and at war and being able to field only 10 units aside from garrisons and such, so i've just stuck with the cheap effective mercenary guys... In large numbers (2 or more units) they decimate Seleukid Thureophoroi and Pantapadoi (who made the skins for those pantapadoi guys? Crucify him! ) and more importantly they kill their cavalry quite easily, except for their generals, i have to enrich uranium and use tactical miniature battlefield ancient nukes to take out those... But i'll definately try some tomorrow anywho... Bedtime for now.

They have a bonus against elephants, and a huge two handed sword.

This is our current Indian unit.

I'm not sure, but we have an Indian-Elephant, Light Horse, perhaps even another Indian infantry on our list.

There is an armored indian elephant in the works right now. We also have the indo-greek hoplite.

The thing about those longbowmen is that they have more men/unit than other archers. With unit size set to Huge, a max strength Indian Longbows unit has 200 men. This makes them more effective at archery than another unit with same missile attack value would be, and it also makes them better at garrisoning cities.

The problem is that there can only be a limited number of factions in the game, and historically, the Indians did not stir beyond India. An Indian king would most likely first try to secure the rest of India, which is of the map. So, in order to accuratly represent this faction, the map needs to be extended east.
This is basically the same debate we had about the Yeuzhi.

So, given that they historically did not expand, and that the map does not include their obvious target of expansion, it is unlikely that they will be included a faction.

Since no one else has mentioned it; we were also planning a chariot unit for the original Indian rebels.
