Will we be seeing archimedes' war inventions? I'm assuming some of his weapons were larger than the typical roman ballista, which doesn't really look so big.

I'm inclined to think the "death ray" was possible but I don't see how he could have got all those guys to stand just so with their shields. I expect it was just used to blind the crews, so they ran into each other.

Don't underestimate moral effects - if even one ship was destroyed by claw or set to fire with sunlight every crew would think twice before moving close to the walls. The effects - tower deployment was more difficult, rock throwers were less effective agains walls when put to far from them.
I believe it was a load of guys with polished shields acting like a parabolic mirror.
