Happens all the time... most people interpret it as "Please leave us alone while we form up an army to kill your sorry behind"

I have had so many diplomats approach me with that proposal it's untrue.
Whatever faction, whatever position they are in, I'm guessing that they haven't been to their self assertiveness classes recently.

One of the charming things about the old KOEI Romance of Three Kingdoms was your ability to kill an ambassador.

You took a penalty in loyalty etc., but if the proposal truly was vile enough you did have an option that puts a red X to shame.

HAH! That used to be an option in Castles and Castles II as well.

They were pretty good games at the time. The one thing good about them (aside from building your own castles) was your military, political and agent powers were restricted. You could never spam endless armies or perform dozens of sabotage missions to screw up the AI. You slowly gained points that enabled you to recruit better units or do more missions but you'd still find yourself stretched. I'd like to see a similiar point system in TW for agents and diplomacy so I don't have hundreds of stupid characters to control.

Yeah, Castles II had this very strange, but effective, use of real time in what otherwise was a turn-based style game. It also just occurred to me that as bad as the Pope was in MTW, it was nowhere near as annoying as in Castles II!

I have gotten that message quite a bit as well. One of you put forth the idea that they want peace for a little bit so that they can build up an army and come back.

One counter-response I have given is a cease fire and trade rights. They always refuse.

When they demand money to not attack, I turn it around and erase their proposal, and then demand 10 times as much not to attack them.

They usually respond with the "this meeting is concluded, may our next be as productive" tile.

The message itself makes no sense to me except for the idea of getting one off of them long enough to build up and army.

I liked it on Spartan when you could blind annoying diplomats, but far better if you could do thing like that or alternatively offer money as a present or simply execute a diplomat.

I want a mod to RTW where you can hold him as prisoner for ransom or like you said,
    "simply" dispose of him

I liked the idea of pouring molten lead into a diplomat's ear.

I had this message in my EB campaign the other day. The Macedonians had started a war on me (Rome) in Illyria for no good reason. Then I shipped over two massive armies to their back door in South Greece and got that message.

At the time, I did not really understand the strange message and had to conquer Macedon to meet the Roman EB victory conditions anyway, so I refused. I was then immediately - same turn - attacked by one of their armies hiding in South Germany.

Based on this experience, I think it arises in situations analogous to that of Japan in 1941 - the AI is saying, in the long run, we're not sure we can beat you. But we in the short run, we can hurt you.
