I'd say no... One time an aging can of bear spray out our house discharged because it had gotten a pressure leak, it got in the central air system and started making everyone in our house start gagging for air, and our eyes really burned, so we had to get the fire department to clean out all of the air in our house. Yeah, it was pretty rediculous.

Well I don't know about Germany, but it is legal in California.

I carry a kubotan keychain which incorporates a small cannister of pepper spray inside it. I bought it and the pepper spray cartridges from a uniform shop which caters to policemen and security guards (Butler's Uniforms, Sacramento).

This particular kubotan is approximately 6 inches long and made of metal, and hollow. A thumb safety prevents accidental discharge. The spray emits from the end opposite that of where the keys are, triggered by depressing the metal post to which the key ring is attached. It's accurate up to about 5 feet or so--but one must take wind conditions into consideration. The cartridge requires changing periodically, whether the spray has been used or not.

I've only used it once, and it worked beautifully. One blast of spray, and one torquing backhand strike with the end of the kubotan to the face between the upper lip and nose of my would-be mugger, and he was no longer a threat. The look on his face when the spray hit him was priceless. He never saw the kubotan, which I had drawn out of my pocket when I saw him approaching (it was late, dark, and I was walking alone in an isolated area).

I had one problem with it--I neglected to re-safety it properly after showing it to a friend, and put it back in my pocket. I developed a very nasty and painful rash from seepage on the inside of my upper thigh, about 3 inches from my crotch. This was my fault, not the product's--just be sure that the safety is on when you put it in your pocket.

PS: I just noticed the " ... want my girl to be safe." part. Pepperspray can just as easily be a liability in an assault situation. If you do end up getting some for her, get her some training from a reputable trainer as well. It is rather easy for an experienced "street" thug to avoid, acquire and redirect defense articles like pepperspray back on the defender.

In my opinion, the best way to "be safe" is to avoid areas, people, and situations that lend themselves to trouble (i.e. avoid walking in isolated areas alone late at night ... ). It is also good to be alert, fast on your feet, and aware of your immediate resources at all times (particularly, help from benevolent humans nearby). "Fighting fire with fire" is not usually a good idea unless you are trained for such activity.

    or a 40mm Grenade Launcher.

I so want one on the back of a pickup truck. A full auto 40mm one too. That'd be sweet to go hunting with.

well its a difficult one, would you rather be woken up by an alarm, or pepperspray?

I find three alarms is the magic number (to wake me up that is)
Although a pepper spray alarm clock would incourage you to wash your face in the morning

No, its an offensive weapon in the UK. You can buy things like dye sprays to mark an attacker, but I can't imagine anyone thinking its a good idea to spray a mugger with a dye.

There really is almost nothing you can carry in the UK, IIRC an offensive weapon is anything designed to be or whjich you intend to use as a weapon. So you can be convicted for carrying even a perfectly innocent object, if they can prove that in fact you were intending to use it as a weapon. Kubotan key chains could get you in trouble if a copper recognises what it is (designed as a weapon) but of course having something like a short cylindrical metal bodied torch in your pocket is perfectly fine so long as you remember that you are planning to use it only as a light source, officer. What, you mean you could put it in your fist and hit someone? Well I never knew.
