Smile Handgrenades, grenade-arrows, dirtbags and horned helmets ― Genghis attacks China

    .
The latest episode of Genghis Khan has just ended. 49 year old Genghis' now exceeding 100,000 men army waged war upon the allied Jurjet state (Western Xia?) guarding the northwestern borders of China. Assaulting the walls of Xanxi (Xaanxi? which one?) they faced defenders with handgrenades and grenade attached arrows.

Genghis ordered dirtbags to be filled and handed to each cavalryman. At knight, under the foot archers' cover fire, they lifted an artificial mound before the not-high-enough city walls. The cavalry assaulted and the defenders routed.

An interesting detail, all Jurjets were wearing horned helmets.

Chinese gunpowder innovation sometimes seemed to know no bounds...i particularly like the one described in Turnbull's Samurai Sourcebook...an iron ball filled with gunpowder and shrapnel with a burning fuse, which was lowered on a big stick into someone's forward trenches...ouch!
this series sounds really good, they've obviously been doing their homework...not sure about the horned helmets though?

Some episodes before this one were abslute крап, eg the Naimanese court was like out of a bad comedy. They seem to be mostly following The Secret History and the whole series is more of a Genghis saga than an objective documentary. But then, it's made by the Red China Ltd.

Mouz, is it ok to write ruder things in other alphabets?

I just ask because I'll be using Greek letters for rude English words now.

I guess not at all. I posted "crap" and "crappiest" under light masks (Cyrillic and Greek ) because I didn't think it would be flat inapropriate using either of them, but they would look gentler that way.

I wouldn't post Incompatible language in any alphabet though.

    Right... Good post there.

As you can see 'crap' is not disallowed, but that does not mean it can be abused. And if I detect any circumventing the filter by using Greek of Cyrillic... Then *BAM*!

Here are a few lightly edited screenshots. Excuse the bad qua *cough - sneeze - smirk excuse me* Excuse the bad quality; cable TV sucks and our TV card is no help.

I'd appreciate knowledgable comments about the costumes and everything.

apart from the horny helmets it all looks authentic to me, but then my notions of Mongol authenticity are based on the last time i played Age of Empires: Kings...!

what the heck is that bloke doing upside down? some kind of Mongolian David Copperfield?
you ought to post this in the 'Medieval torture...how bad was it?' thread as well!!

It's the execution of Jamuka, Temujin's old mate and long time enemy. They first hung the guy upstraight from arms, stretched from the ankles; then they pulled the ropes tied to the ankles and he got upside down; finally they released the rock already tied to his neck and he died of drowning and/or broken neck. *cough*

That was the priviliged execution practice saved for the Moŋol nobles. Temujin ordered the same for his uncle and cousin but they didn't show theirs. *smirk*

The costumes, what we can see of them seem OK. The execution has a touch of the Hollywoods about it. Those of noble birth were granted death without spilling blood for no commoner held the right to spill the blood of a prince. This was usually in the form of some kind of suffocation or sometimes the back was broken.
Best not to mention the horned helmet

The costume seems authentic, at least they are more authentic then those made by the west...most asians would scratch their head everytime they see western documentries made about them with misguided costumes...
