    Default Ddo

bought the DDO MMPORPG preorder today for giggles since you get 10 day play on Beta when tou preorder. Whats really funny, is I only payed reserve fee at the store but still walked out of there with the key and disc, so If I don't like it I will never go to get the real thing when it gets released.

Never played D&D. MMPORPGS I've played have been Eve, SWG and City Of villains, so we will see how this one stacks up.

I like srarting a game like this from launch, which is why its too late for me to go to WOW. DDO has integrated voice chat, btw.

I'll post some stuff after I get in a couple hours of play. No work tomorrow :P

I am so sick of the fantasy genre, that's why I'm waiting for the Pirate MMO, as the only fantasy MMO I'd play is Conan.

I had my hopes up for this game, but now reading on the Ddo forums about character creation I'm a little dissappointed.

Can you tell us a little bit about how character creation works in Ddo, MRD? I figure for the stats they'd use the normal D&D game method of whatever were the last rules to come out, but I was more interested in how customizable the appearance of your character is.

The comments on their forums make it sound like just about all you can change is the characters face. I always find it kinda boring playing a game like this when 1/4 of the other players you see looks like your identical twin.

The character appearance creation in beta blows. Not sure if this will change any within the month, since there are about 20 features not in game atm that i know will be in game when it goes live.

You currently cant change height or width or weight, cant change clothes
(thats what equipment is for) and get to choose from like 8 hairs/nose/beard/eye styles etc. It's very disappointing but i havent been able to confirm if it will ro will not change.

This was also something I hated about COH/COV was not being able to change body type much at all. I mean, in SWG when i unlocked Jedi i immediately found an image designer to make me as fat as possible, and was looking forward to having a fat barbarian or a 7 foot tall dwarve........

    There IS camera Collission.

this is not a select target/spam button game. You have to have line of sight, you have to be facing (or kinda facing, in cases of weapons that do glance damage) in order for attack to hit. NPCs will flank you and run behind you and circle you and jump back out of range so there is a lot of mouse looking on the part of the player. Dont expect to play diabloe 2 style and just stand and hack away toe to toe it aint happenin

On one hand, itsd annoying as hell because im not used to RPGs being like this unless they are in space. Im also used to having auto-follow target, so if u hit an attack and they run behind you, you turn when attacking and shoot in the right direction. At the same time, it makes coordination a little more important, melee players wont be able to mob the same npc because they all wont fit due to collission, and ranged people are gonna have a hell of a time following targets, although there is a single, generic attack you can put on auto (the only one u can put on auto) that makes ranged (and melee)a little more bearable as long as you are facing the target or he isnt blocked by you (yes, your poarty members can block targets)

Never played DD, but i now realize that Knights of the Old Republic apparently used DD rules because skill sets and bonuses are very similar, so I'm not quite behind on the learning curve since i played both KOTORS. theres still a lot of rules i dont get, and I havent figured out how the turn base is applied to real time combat other than simply puting cooldown timers on some attacks, and making other attacks an either-or thing, like i cant "trip" a guy and then use the paladin attack that reduces his armor rating, its either or until the recharge timer is complete on the one i used

Warforged arent affected by normal heals but can be repaired, and the only characters who get spells that heal warforgeds are wizards and sorcerers

Wizards have spells, not sure how the learning works, but they are interruptable, whereas sorcerers do quick fire but less damage.

Bards seem really cool, i'm leaning towards them a little

Barbarians are more hit and run type of fighters, with "fighters" being the tanks and paladins being a little melee/magic. The barbarians I've partied with tend do do high damage attacks and combos but take a lot of damage if they dont kill the mobs quick or if they cant back out of melee range, but they also have stealth and get mad jump and tumble skills

Humans get an extra feat at level one, and fighter class does as well, so expect to see a lot of human fighters for those 3 feat points at gamestart.

You get to use victory points you gain in between levels (like 2 or 3) to get enhancements, which are like new feats and can be either passive or active. They can be dropped and traded later, becuase u can only use 4 at a time.

In addition to normal weapon armor and head slots you get gloves, necklace, boots, bracelets, glasses etc although i havent found anything like that yet

Everyone will likely have a trader on each server, a toon with high haggle skills, for the purpose of muling. From what ive seen and talked about in game with people is the haggle points make huge differences in sale value of loot and purchases, so there will be lots of mules out there probably (i think max server toons is 6)

So far, merchants are buggy, theres no buy button (u dbl click to buy) and no itme descript (you single click, then punch the examine button by the target window). The problem arises when u have to also examine your current equipment/skills for comparison reasons. this means that you buy a lot of things you dont want when you are simply examining them because it saves the clicks or something, so when you go back and select that merchant item 2 minutes later you buy it even though you single clicked Certainly this has to be fixed before live becuase i could imagine the disasters it would cause with lag

Sorry its all disjointed be back tomorrow

Forgot to mention word has it u can use xbox 360 controller for this game. I prefer keyboards on yout typical PC game of any sort, but this is a mix off first person/diablo 2 style that makes mouse and keyboard really difficult. Of course i did just break my nice big ergo keybaord and im using a backup half the size, so that my be my problem, but trying to rotate and keep line of sight and keep the angle zoomed out enought that i still have a godd field of vision is really really hard, even in third person mode (i wouldnt recommend 1st person to anyone)

    Dungeons and Dragons: Overkill ?

I find any D&D system lame and refuse to play them as a principle. Also I refused to play NWN

    D&D Online.

I think you missed out with NWN, but who am I to say.

Thanks for touching on the character creation bit, Major. That's pretty dissappointing news. Prolly just have to wait for NWN2.

I boycotted NWN too, but I enjoyed the Baldur's Gate series (not so much Throne of Bhaal, though) and the original Icewind Dale.

Wow this game really sucks. Im not going to pay 15 per month to play against a computer when I can do that for free on 90% of the other games.

I can see myself playing this for about 3 months and then running out of content, and since theres no PVP and none planned

You have to do missions to get xp, all missions pretty much require a group, guilds are pointless as theres no pvp, its Diablo 2

Sorry, I would type more about it but I simply don't want to. I'm getting a preorder refund tomorrow and have already told RL frineds who are playing that I'm outs. Not even interested in finishing out my 10 day trial...played 5 nites in a row, 2 hrs each night, got to level 5 by grouping with friends or people in game I don't care to know, and it was pretty much the same thing each time.

It's going to be like WOW, where you will satisfy your thirst for variety by making multiple characters to play multiple roles, and that is something I don't care to do.

I'm waiting for Legends of Conan: The Hyborian Age. It should set the bar pretty high for future MMORPGs, in Character Creation, Skills, and "Missions".

Yeah, I agree. The D&D system was not designed for computer play, and it shows.
