Like Sasaki said, a wide formation is a better option when doing a frontal charge. However, against the rear of a pinned unit it can be very effective, especially when the unit is wavering. Also, by switching from close formation to wedge you quickly turn a line into a collumn (sort of) that can insert itself into gaps in the enemy line. A wedge is more manoevrable than a wide, close formation as well.
