I have experienced battles that lasted 1:50 hours.. And it all depends on the players experience (In MP) and how a fool the A.I is (In SP). So, I say no to blame the speed of the battle for such things, after all, if we want it as it was, increase the number of men to 1000 and see how long will the battle last.
