Do not be afraid of the black man !
So I was walking through a shopping street this afternoon, minding my own business, when I noticed this black guy in the middle of the road (pedestrian street) looking at the crowd. I, of course, immediately knew what was going to follow, I was heading straight towards him and he had noticed that I had noticed him. So when i come close he walks up to. (note; the conversation happened in Dutch)
"You are not afraid of the black man are you ?"
"Of course not"
He extends his hand, I shake it, he goes into one of those cool handshakes, I follow jus to be polite.
"Hakuna Matata" He says, and i immediately wonder whether he knows Swahili that hasn't been used in a disney movie.
Anyway, I'll shorten my story, he hands me some booklets about Africa (pushes them in my hands) and asks me to buy them to support his studies and to support Africa (I never figured out for what is was supposed to be). He also claimed to just know a little Dutch, while the only thing that seemed bad about his dutch was his inconsistent 'foreigner' accent. I politely say I'm not interested, I actually said this before he pushed these booklets in my hands because I knew what was coming. And then he says
"Don't be a racist"
I'm a racist for not buying a couple of lousy overpriced booklets from a random guy on the street ????This is probably the most pushy guy I ever met trying to sell those things. Anyway, I got a bit pissed of and practically shoved those booklets back into his hands. he was of course reluctant to accept them again, I finally succeeded in giving them back, he probably called me a racist a couple of times during that, I don't really remember the details, and I walk away.
Now I don't really have a problem with people trying to sell me stuff on the street (well, as long as there aren't too many of them), but do they have to be so damn pushy and do they have to pull the racist card everytime ? Every single one I've met has started the conversation with the sentence "Don't be afraid of the black man". Do they have a training center somewhere ? Someone has to be printing those books in mass quantities. And why do they have to pretend to be 'African' ? I'm willing to bet that guy has never been to the black continent in his life.
I guess there's not really a point in this post, I just felt like ranting
