    Default About onagers

Is there a way to give onagers an order to bombard fixed targets? I mean some area instead of an unit, building and parts of city wall. Sometimes it is fine to give them a target to "follow"... like enemy general or slow phalanx/spear wall. But in sieges it would be nice to give fixed targets. I mean streets and squares where enemy units are moving back and forth. This way I could use them like an artillery barrage that stays in one choke point. Now I have to give them a unit to shoot at -> they run away from my "target zone" ->next unit -> more running -> well, you get the picture. In the worst case scenario that target unit runs straight to my first wave and those friggin onagers decimate my cohorts.

The blinkin' things aren't accurate, and letting them "fire at will" picking their own targets means that they will mow down lots of your own.

I tend to pick their targets for them.

They do not do "area" fire.

This is no problem in sieges, of course, since you can target any building close to the zone you want pounded and rely on the "scatter effect" to get some hits.

In the field, you simply have to wait for a unit in the right vicinity.

Well that should be fixed in MTW2. Not so much the accuracy but there should be an option for target areas. It could be used as optional attack (+alt).

That way high valour onagers would have some tactical use. Now they take way too much micro management to be really useful.

Fire at will is fine with them, as long as you keep the onagers closely behind your troops or, if possible, in front of them.

It depends on whether you are using the special ability. With flaming ammunition on, they become dreadfully inaccurate and almost anything that is in a 90 degree arc in front of them is at risk. However, with normal ammunition they are much safer. I tend not to use flaming ammo, as it is ahistorical and they are overly effective against the poor A.I. anyway. Just knock down the walls, and go over to good, honest hand-to-hand fighting.
