I don't think skins as such are any sort of compatibility issue - they're just a texture wrapped around the, uh, whatever that thing now is called they're wrapped around. One issue might be that many of the skin packs I've seen come with helpful installation instruction up to and including a ready-made DMB file - but one that uses the old-version skeletons. In RTW 1.5+ just about everything that was once "fs_fast_something" (not counting "fs_fast_horse") is "fs_semi_fast_something", and the program bluntly refuses to work with the old stuff.
It's not a particularly major editing hassle, though. Running a two-stage find-and-replace on Notepad (the first to replace all "_fast_" with "_semi_fast_", the second to clean up any resulting "fs_semi_semi_fast_" into "fs_semi_fast_") handles it neatly and quickly in my experience. Oh yeah, and making sure fs_fast_horse is okay...

"Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."
