There are times I wish they’d just ban everything- baccy and beer, burgers and bangers, and all the rest- once and for all. Instead, they creep forward one apparently tiny step at a time. It’s like being executed with a bacon slicer.

A mac is so much more fun to work with, it is a lot more stable (how on earth did he get it to crash????), it puts windows in a world of shame. I have a G4 with 800 mhz, and it is miles ahead of my PC (that is no less then 3 times as fast) because it doesn't need to do whatever the hell it is that windows does.
And I mean.... look at it!

If I try the same thing on my pc it is coughing up blood, absolutely unworkable. A friend of mine has the new G5, and it is amazing, it seems like the little baby doesn't have to calculate anything at all. They are a bit expensive, and gaming still belongs on the pc, but for everything else, mac all the way; especially if you like gimmicks.Originally Posted by Taffy_is_a_Taff

But it is not true. Upgrades in a mac is TWICE as easy as in a PC. The new G5, my half brother bought one, since he is a gfx designer, it beats the PC in every area, except gaming. Diablo 2 and Americas Army works on a mac as well as AoE II

Diablo 2?! Sweet! I loved that game when I played it 5 years ago on the PC! And they have AoE II?! Awesome, I loved that too!
Now, I'm not going to apologize for the steaming hunk of crap that is windows, but macs are even worse. The epitome of form over function. Linux+PC = nigh-on perfection.

It's easy to tell who have actually tried the mac, for other purposes than gaming, such as photo or video editing and who has not.

Well, I like XP ok- it's just overpriced and has too many security vulnerabilities. But, Id take Linux (and I do - Mandriva) of OS X on most any day. It's free, arguably more stable, and doesnt force you to use a closed architecture and a far deeper software library. I'd just like to see Linux get more user-friendly... I had to install the Gimp from source code and it definitely wasnt a good time. Now, I'm not going to apologize for the steaming hunk of crap that is windows, but macs are even worse. I like OS X ok, but I'd never pay Apple's exorbitant prices for it. I never found the performance argument very compelling for Apple- if you're telling me that a $1300 Mac can outperform a $500 PC.... my response would be- I would hope so.![]()

I had an original iMac, and while it wasn't a bad machine, there was no truth to the contention that Mac's crash less than Wintel machines, at least back in the OS8 to 9 days. I managed to crash that mac daily just browsing the web. I got real handy with a paper clip in those days (actually, I found pushpins to be a lot easier to use to reboot the thing).
The buzz now is that OSX is leaps and bounds better than Windows, but honestly, I look at Mac prices and Windoze doesn't look so bad, on second thought.
Let me confess: I am an operating system floozy. A man of loose principles and unsavory associates. I'm not just bi -- I'm tri. I have a G5 OS X Mac and a dual-boot Athlon running WinXP and Fedora Linux. I'm a slut, and I know it.
The're all good. And they're all good in different ways. If I want to game or use a common app, I have the Windows love. If I need to run a quick server the Linux gives me bliss. If I need serious security OS X has the stuff I need. And if I'm too lazy to put together a real web page, and just need to slap up a quickie for the family, the iLife apps are killer.
Now if only some evil genius would combine all three, leaving out the following:
(1) Overpriced Max hardware.
(2) Ever-creeping DRM in Windows.
(3) Interface wonkiness in Linux.
Then I'll be the happiest Lemur on the block.
Don't go hating another OS until you've worked with it. There's plenty of love for everyone. Of course, only a man of low character would say that, but that's where I'm at. Say no to platform hate. Say yes to dual-boot love.
[edit]
Oh, and with the new Intel Mac OS X, it may just be possible to create a single machine that boots three ways. Who's up for a three way? I know I am. The key will be getting it all to work on an Athlon 64 dual-core machine ... oooh, I sense a new project coming on ...

brilliant vid, funnyi dont know anything about macs as i'v never even been near one...
I trust that you, as a slashdot reader, have heard of the possibility to run OS X on a PC? (now!) There's been news of a hack lately.Originally Posted by Lemur
I also run a dual boot system with XP and Suse 9. Sometimes I toy around with live systems. The Projekt Looking Glass 3D desktop from Sun is
quite interesting. You can't do much with it yet though, it's eye candy pure.
Another thing I want to test these days is to put "Damn Small Linux" on a
USB stick. An article I just finished claims that it will only take 50MB and
is able to run on most hardware configs. You can also save your personal stuff on the same stick.![]()

Yah, I knew about the OS X hack, but I thought we weren't supposed to talk about such things in the Frontroom. Since that would involve, you know, um, borrowing software. I guess the situation was implied by stating that I wanted to get it up and running on an AMD64 box anyway, since Apple has thrown in with Intel ....
I dont see what's wrong with a Windows. It does the job I want it to, it's easy to use and games work on it. So lay off the stickin to the man crap lol with 'steaming hunk of' comments, please tell me why it's not good. I'm actually interested, I'm not a techie, but to me Windows isn't so bad.
Edit: forgot to mention vids lol, very funny!
Exactly, Sovergeign. Everyone says that Bill gates is freinds with the devil, but do you even believe that?!? Jeez.

If I was smart, I would have a witty punchline in this sig that would make everyone ROTFL.
I'm not smart.
Well, I do. He has been holding off software from the market with his monopoly, for no good reason than to make money, donting an odd million or so to a poor country now and then, clearly a cover up - he smells if not of 666 then at least 333.

Maybe Bill Gates is a bit of a idiot, but give some credit to the people that work their butts off to get all of the sucurity patches, Operrating Systems and more.

Never used a mac, from what I've seen it looks cool.
I loath linux, but that's possibly because my cs professors assume we all know it inside and out and keep saying things like: "Hey, why don't you add a bit to the kernal so that it keeps track of the number of context switches, recompile it and test it out with the mini-shell I want you to write, all by next tuesday".
The hack-stuff is way over my techno-head but suffice it to say that any discussion of software piracy should be no discussion at all.
Thanks.

I've used Macs and I like them. If someone was to give me a decent Mac with OSX on it I'd happily use the thing. But to actually buy one.... I could never justify the expense when I could get so much more bang for my buck on a PC platform.

Xiahou, I agree - I would never buy a mac - then again Im not a professional grafich designer. If I was, I'd probably buy one. Macs are for specialists, designers, artists and creative people, who dont play games like RTW and EU II![]()
