Is there any place you can actually see the cartoons themselves? Plus are there any muslims here who could comment on exactly what in the cartoons that is so provoking? Seems like the discussion has been a little one sided so far, and by principle I'd like to judge the argumentation on both sides. That said, I doubt anything that could possibly be drawn in cartoons would change my opinion that there's no validity in demands to infringe freedom of press which is a basic part of western democracy, unless the pictures actually break laws and try to cause hatred towards, and generalizations about, muslims in general and so on (which some of my sources seem to indicate was hidden in the pictures, but I can't verify that until I can see the pictures).

Oh I'm sorry, I missed that. Anyway my opinion is pretty much the same - the generalization and hate propaganda the calling the prophet a terrorist is on the borderline of being considered a crime, according to Danish law as well, but a trial would probably not result in anything else than the newspaper having to pay a very small fine. The question is - will such a trial be as successful in ending the hatred as the first witch executions were at stopping the witch hunt? Or will it have a positive effect? Hard to tell... In any case I don't see where they're trying to get, even if there's a trial there's no way there'll be more than a symbolic fine according to existing law afaik. The boycott of goods from a country seems like a very irrational and unfair way to react to that a small number of inhabitants in that country insulted them. Compare this boycott and hatred as a result of an insult to the hatred and similar as results of actual violent actions which were the case with 9/11 followed by war. Both cases show an irrational way of projecting the punishment of very few to an entire nation, but in this case we're talking about an insult, not violent action. This is cleary an escalation in hatred between Euro-Americans and the muslim world. Interesting to see what the consequences will be.

I found two of the original pictures offensive and I can certainly sympathize with those who are outraged.

But a lot of this nastiness was caused by these self-proclaimed Danish Imams, and their little tour de misinformation in the Middle East. Until now, even western media managed to misinform about the pictures. Some said that the Prophet (pbuh) was depicted with a pig trout(!) and others supposedly had rude sexual content, both false allegations.

Frigging ridiculous about the West being constantly chastised for labeling Muslims when we see a beheading or a suicide bomb, but someone runs a cartoon and hundreds of innocent Danish workers lose their jobs.

11.000 Danish jobs could indeed be in peril, but so far nobody has been fired (some have been sent on leave for a few weeks, though).

I know I found at least one of the pictures vaguely irritating. Given that me and faith don't really fit into the same sentence, and that I know from experience muslims can get a bit... uptight about certain religious topics, I can well imagine a fair few of the faithful blowing their tops.

Especially if the source that informs them of it isn't exactly neutral.

That said, methinks some folks have a stick up their ass and should relax a bit.
"Let us remember that there are multiple theories of Intelligent Design. I and many others around the world are of the strong belief that the universe was created by a Flying Spaghetti Monster. --- Proof of the existence of the FSM, if needed, can be found in the recent uptick of global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. Apparently His Pastaness is to be worshipped in full pirate regalia. The decline in worldwide pirate population over the past 200 years directly corresponds with the increase in global temperature. Here is a graph to illustrate the point."

    I know that MP.

Nevertheless, Denmark should have an official Imam education, like your Christian priests.

However insulting those cartoons were (just look silly to me, far more insulting stuff all over the place anyway), burning Danish flags in front of tv cameras is FAR more insulting. Whoever told the protestors to get onto the streets should be forced to apologise.

That danish MP is one of the reason there is such a great split between the West and the Muslim world. That is one of the reasons, rather than a few pictures. That is why this case is rather about the tone of the debate, than these pictures - and that we most undersand.

The Fatah and the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades? They are just trying to rally people to their cause following the defeat to the Hamas. And Islamic Jihad, I assume they didn't want to be left out.

But do note that the Hamas has not organized any of these protests… yet.

    It is all local politics.

The problem is that the governments actually doesnt supports these rallies and riots - it is fundemantlist religious forces that are organizing them. Progress is being made in denmark to establish sense and order again. if it is possible - the EU is probably going to be involved soon.

Maybe not officially. But this is the perfect opportunity to stick it to the West. And in most of the countries, those fundamentalist forces are controlled by the state. Make no mistake, this incident is being exploited for all it is worth by almost every Middle Eastern government involved.

There will be no real progress until the authorities get tired of the ruckus.

I have no problems with muslims, but the way that a few fundamentalist freaks try to manipulate the muslim masses for their own personal gain is quite sickening. Because, who are we kidding, the hate mongering Imams don't go around shooting people, or even sending threating mails, they make sure they remain safe, while a few misguided followers take all the blame. If Osama Bin laden had been serious about his cause, he would have been on the friggin' plane !

But whenever you try to argue with those people, they hide behind 'religious freedom' and their freedom of speech, at same time dictating their ways to the masses, because if you're not careful, someone might get angry...
