Thread: Pink Floyd help

No, I'm not starting a self-help group for thos addicted to Floyd. Although.....

no, what I'm actually doing is asking for the wise patrons of the org for some help. I have the 'money', 'the wall' and 'echoes - greates hits' albums, and I'm looking for some live stuff now. I have a couple of songs from 'Delicate sound of Thunder' and that seems damn awesome, what do you Floyd-a-holics think?

Stop listening to Floyd and start listening to some real music, like Bob Dylan

Whoa dudes, just chill and listen to some Led Zeppelin. You know they are the best. But in the interest of the Floyd.... i've always had a like of the Animals Album, might wanna check that out. The, Pigs (Three Different Ones), is a beauty of a song. Never heard any live stuff sadly, bet it's mind blowing.

Live Floyd?

Boy, are you in the right forum.

First off, Live at Pompeii is both a fantastic film and a fantastic album. The new DVD of the film is crystal clear with great sound and includes both a new version and the original film. Great stuff!

Ummagumma is another must have. The first half is live music and the second half is very experimental studio work.

There are a ton of bootlegs and imports out there as well, which are wonderful. I have several versions of some Floyd songs like Echoes, Fat Old Sun, A Saucerful of Secrets and many others. Some versions are fantastic and some are very nearly disastrous. But they are an excellent way of seeing the true nature of the band. There is one bootleg of a concert in Amsterdam where they forget lines, screw up the effects, blow the solos, all sorts of stuff, but it makes for very interesting listening.

Echoes, for example, has been performed quietly, raunchy, and jazzy (Boston Gardens version). Nice to hear different versions that fit different moods.

The live version of Dark Side of the Moon in London '72 is fantastic. Almost grungy, but very cool. Worth the effort to get. As is the '74 concert in Santa Monica (I think). they we're in top shape that night. They did a version of Fat Old Sun live that is quite unlike the studio version. They tear it out into an opus with great keyboard and guitar solos. Quite possibly my favorite Floyd song of all.

Also, there is a live version of Animals that is almost heavy metal. The copy I have is very bad quality but it's still great. Often, their live stuff blows away the studio work. That shows the band had real talent.

Best of all, a new DVD of their last concert series in '96 is coming out soon. Apparently there's some great old concert footage included as well. Looking forward to this very, very much!

Best Floyd live, hands down is Pulse, live at Earls Court, with Pompey a close second.

Best floyd album is WISH YOU WERE HERE. You want good live Floyd get Pulse.

You people have no taste. "Pulse" is atrocious- they lacerate many of their older songs (I started feeling physically ill listening to "Astronomy Domine") as well as their best album, "Dark Side of the Moon." (That is discounting "Piper at the Gates of Dawn," but I might be the only person alive who thinks that "Piper" was their best album.) The Gilmour songs might have been bearable, were it not for the fact that the rest of the concert is so bad.

If you want good live Floyd, get "Ummagumma," or a bootleg of the London '72 concert. Only heard it once, but it beat the hell outta "Pulse." Yes, I know I am repeating Beirut, but he's right.

But many dont even know that Floyd. Its before Darkside of the Moon . And darkside started the sound most people equate with floyd. The early stuff is really an acid trip. Dont get me wrong I love it. And yes Pulse does have its weak points but it covers most of floyds great songs live. The Live wall concert is also good. Then there are tons of boots available,

Love the boots! I want every pair.

I've found the Floyd bootlegs to be a fantastic journey.

I have an old tape of a Santa Monica concert, '74 I think, where they play Cymbaline and something strange is going on. The song gets very quiet, then stops. Then you hear very loud footsteps followed by a door creaking open. The door closes. More footsteps and another door creaks open. Then closes. Then more footsteps. All the while you can hear the audience laughing. Then a final set of footsteps, another door creaks open, then slams shut very loudly and Cymbaline kicks right back in. The crowd goes berserk. You can hear the guy with the tape recorder laughing hysterically.

I'd love to know what that was all about.

Floyd had lots of those moments.

Have I heard it? Look who you're talking to.

I have the CD, the video, and I saw them live twice doing the tour back around '87. The first show at the Montreal Forum was astounding. 20th row from the stage, dead center. Paid about triple price from a scalper, $500 for four seats. Worth every penny.

I'm a complete Floyadphile. I like all their stuff.

Before you go buying some more esoteric stuff, I'd get DSOTM, WYWH and Animals (My personal favourite-at the moment, at least). You can't really call yourself a Floydophile if you don't own those.

For live Floyd, I myself have ripped the soundtrack of the Pompeii DVD to Ogg, and put it on my Portable Media Player. A lot of the bootlegs are very good, but it can be tricky tracking some of them down.
