Thread: Battle Speeches

Less battle speeches for sure, especially now alexander has put the idea of negative traits into my head.

Less speeches more battle cries and orders on field and before battle commences hearing your troops singing nationalistic or even biggoted tunes is enough to get your blood pumping before the battle.

    More variety in less categories.

I didn't mean to imply that only console gamers appreciated the pre-battle speeches. I was refering to the stereotype/archetype that exists among hardcore gamers regarding the rest of the gaming population. I think it safe to say that the majority of gamers are ignorant of the history that most Total War games take place in. (Note: this is not to say that I'm somehow better or above these gamers - I'd never even heard of Sengoku Jidai until I installed Shogun.) Consuquently, most gamers are more concerned with the cinematic value of these games (as well as their ability to entertain) than they are chuffed about historical accuracy. Then again, it's just my two cents, and I am a fairly cynical bloke, so take this for whatever it's worht.

I think you're all taking this way too seriously. The accents of the Romans in Rome sounded more Australian or even Devonshire than American. The Centuriam definately sounded like a Russel Crows inpersonator.

The speeches should be in English. Why? They are there to entertain, not to be historically accurate. I like historical accuracy but up to a point. The pre-battle speeches are about history they're about fun and they should be in whatever language the game is in, otherwise the humour will be lost.

Given the choice, I'd prefer MTW. But I think it will be closer to RTW. It costs time and money to determine which factions speak what language and then find people to speak it convincingly. And note that, for example, medieval (middle?) English is different from modern English, and such is true with other languages. If CA spent time and money on hundreds or thousands of voice samples and speeches, it would delay the release by a while, I would think.

If CA truly supported modding efforts, they would selected quality voicemods and make them official. That would be sweet, downloading new voices in faction-specific languages. But this is unlikely, in my opinion.
I agree with all your statements. R:TW's accents were laughable, so I prefer the M:TW-way. English pre-battle speeches wouldn't bother me that much though, but please leave out the silly accents.

No, but the units shout their orders in Latin, Russian or Arabic. Not very accurate either (I doubt most Catholics spoke Latin, the Byzantines certainly didn't speak Russian, and Turkish soldiers wouldn't be adressed in Arabic), but it gave far more immersion than the R:TW voices.

Yeah, I will certainly agree with that. If all the battle speeches are going to be in English, forget those embarrassingly bad "foreign" accents and just have straightforward English. After all, you only play one faction at a time anyhow...

speeches actually in French and German and so on, or the speeches in english with a dodgy French or German or wahtever accent (ass appropriate)?
I think they gonna go with the accents...

I wouldn't like to see speeches in French or German, simply because I understand little German and not a word in French. Please, keep the speeches at least in English, but get rid of the stereotypical accents. England could have clear English dialects while everyone else could have plain English without any particular accent at all.

Hey, I liked the battle speeches too, but the accents (and the game's voice-acting overall) definitely left something to be desired. I have a lot of respect for the Marines which help defend my country, but they shouldn't be doing voice-acting as Roman centurions, that's for sure!
