Talking Prez Panders to Anti-Manimal Lobby!

A very funny take on the President's State of the Union discussion of cloning and embryonic resedarch. As the article states, Dr. Moreau will leave the country in rage.

No, it was pretty much what I thought it was- splicing human genes into animals for testing purposes.

So what scientists have been doing is inserting human genes into mice, to produce similar genetic overdoses in their development. As I reported before, there have been partial insertions, but now a team of researchers has inserted a complete human chromosome 21 into mouse embryonic stem cells

I would totally support human/animal splicing if it meant I could get a bigger penis or super-speed or something

What? Don't you know that all you have to do is reply to the e-mail in your inbox and your bigger penis is only minutes away?

They made mice with nearly entirely human nerve cell brains and it made no difference.

They probably sampled from some British sink estate or something.

Does this ban mean the USA won't be able to benefit from the latest triumph of Taiwanese Science?

It's used to easily see that the inserted genes is active.

Preliminary human research with maintained theme could be intersting though.
We are all aware that the senses can be deceived, the eyes fooled. But how can we be sure our senses are not being deceived at any particular time, or even all the time? Might I just be a brain in a tank somewhere, tricked all my life into believing in the events of this world by some insane computer? And does my life gain or lose meaning based on my reaction to such solipsism?

My biggest fear is that if countries refuse to develop such things they'll not even know who to deal with the threats of others creating them. (Sort of like the UK and USA don't of course manufacture biological or chemical weapons - our labs only work hard to disarm them... of course they have to make them first...)

Although definitely Sci-Fi, facing a foe that can either give its soldiers a compound that removes fear or develops soldiers that become complete psychos when a certain dietry additive is removed is I would imagine one possible endpoint. Designer plagues aimed at certain ethnic groups is of course another.

An enemy that wishes to die for their country is the best sort to face - you both have the same aim in mind.

Like Saddam's search for the "Jew gene". I thought my eyes were going to roll right out of my head when I heard that one. I'm not sure how it was verified but I know it isn't beneath him.

I think it's interesting. People have always wanted to emulate animal characteristics, and the practicalities of having a tail would be boundless...

THere was a thread about 6-8 months ago that talked about manimals and the ethics of it. I was called a prude and a luddite because I frowned on it, so I changed my stance. I'm still waiting for bucky, moo-moo and scratchy: the man-beaver (aka human chainsaw); man-cow (aka lawnmower) and man-badger (aka intelligent shovel) that were going to free me from yard work forever.

Come on, all you cloning & eugenics fans... where's my tools? I'm tired of the promise of the future, I want my yard cleaned up, and I want it yesterday!

@ Lemur, I'll see your transgenic bunny and raise you PyroNelly, the firebreathing Elephant.

On second thoughts maybe I'll fold, never was much good at bluffing.

@ Don Corleone, Don't be silly, obviously no one thinks that hybrid manimals should be used for such trivial tasks. Obviously they should only ever be created in highly secure enviroments for extremely specific purposes.

We can only hope, Gibbon, we can only hope. First we have to get past the growing-human-ears-on-the-backs-of-mice phase, amusing as it may be:

Scientists have in the past spliced human genes into bacteria so that these bacteria were to produce insulin.

Much good can come from cloning and genetical research, but even more bad things. It's difficult to formulate a law that effectively allows the good parts and prohibits the dangerous parts. As long as that obstacle remains it IMO seems logical to prohibit the whole thing. Just imagine how the value of human life would decrease if it was possible to clone and genetically modify people. Already plastic surgery and makeup has dangerous effects to self-esteem, indentity and respect of life. It's not just a myth that some scientists are working on cloning actual human beings and perform similar very unethical and dangerous things. So while the decision might be caused by religious values and way of thinking, there's scientific and humanistic argumentation for the decision.
    Under construction...
