Hmm, as the allies, hold your lz's whatever the cost, unless XXX corps is a few hours away(if you can get US army units, your safe). As the Germans, getting a even a toe hold on the lz can be decisive on the first day.

Great game series. CC5 has a great campaign, too bad it's so buggy. Basic advice:
When attacking, supress the target area with fire, move one group up, then leapfrog over. Never move into an area that you have not supressed first unless you know for certain that there are no enemies there.
Enemies in fortified positions should be flanked and assaulted from close range while being supressed from the front.
Always support your units!
Keep a couple units back as reinforcements in case something goes wrong.
If you can put your hand on CC3, its even better. Plus there's loads of mod and maps to download.
CC3 had a great online community. The first game i played online.
Combat Mission is superior in my opinion, but Close Combat is great fun too.

Combat mission is a great game. At first i didnt liked the 1 min. turn. But after a while, a few defeat at the hands of Elmo, i get used to it. I even have created a few maps and mission for it.
I am a Combat Mission junky. I've played all three games rather extensively, but Combat Mission campaigns should be awesome too.
Most of the Countries I've been too, people drive on the right side of the road instead of the left...with the exception of the UK, and Japan.

Close combat is one of those games which you can just go back to and enjoy anytime. I have a bridge too far, which I have played extensively and I am currently struggling in the bocage of Invasion Normandy. The operations are great fun - you often play on the same map, so you you develop a good feel of what works and what doesn't. So look through the bargin bins - these are well worth picking up.

If you have CC5, you should definitely download the Gold, Juno, Sword (GJS) mod. It's easily the best mod I've seen for any CC game.

Been playing Close Combat for years, somewhat dismayed upon realisation
that I had overlooked this thread. [Currently still enjoying CC Stalingrad.]

The first time I played a CC game was the demo of the first one. It was truly great! The only one I ended up buying was CC4, although I do wish to play the other ones! Perhaps I should try and look where to find 'em.
I liked that morale was present in the games, seeing some of your men crawling away from the shelling was awesome. It's just a great series.
I tried one of the Combat Mission demo's, but I couldn't get it started. I heard it's a really good series though.

CC2 is a good one if you can find it. CC3 was more oriented to armor fighting, but as I recall there is a mod which brings the infantry closer to its historical level of effectiveness relative to armor.

I really love this series...Played countless hours...still play it when I get the time - CC3.
CC3 is by far the most realistical WWII game ever made, IMO. Excellent campaign, challenging missions, grat number of units...just a great game.
CC4 is rather bad , because the AI and the whole challenge was lowered in order not to allow Americans to lose - defending side has been vastly favourised.
CC5 is better, but a bit buggy. Still I've enjoyed it.
CC6 was my great wish, bu it's gone down the drain...damn...

I've played some of the Close Combat games and definitely the best thing about them is the morale system - the blighters just won't leave the foxhole and charge the enemy tanks sometimes, no matter how many times you try!!!
Actually realistic I think, unlike a lot of games.

Sure? I found the Germans to be horribly easy to win with. Generally I managed to average out with 3:1 losses in men and 5:1 losses in tanks.Originally Posted by BelgradeWar

But, this is extremely helpful when you're outpowered and outgunned an caught by surprise - as the Americans were. You can wiggle yourself out of very tough situations this way. Plus, the American AT guns are way too powerful. Plus, the opponent strategic AI is dubious, at best.
Anyway, I didn't play with Germans. Never really do. I guess when a human play the Germans it's much historicaly realistical, because a human player knows how to exploit German advantages. And the AI is at the other side.

Actually I liked the demoralizing aspect as it could give me some easy kill in the next battle.
Push the enemy down to a single point on the map then demoralize him. Next time he will pop up in a big clump, easily moved down by a few MG42s in churchtowers.
But I agree the US AT-guns were terribly good. 57mm guns easily taking out Panthers and Tigers. And they hit practically every time, unlike my tanks. Hmm... you might be right the game was tilted towards the US forces. But I guess that was because the Germans have so much stronger forces.
At least in CC5 the Germans are fairly weak but have great defensive positions. I found it to be rather balanced. I especially liked when the US forces tried to land troops initially with tanks and all, and all you had was a single AT-gun and some Panzerschrecks as well as MG42s in the pillboxes.
Usually I would lose those battles (and get pushed back a bit where I could better ambush them) but only after causing heavy casualties, and that seems fair enough.
One has to love the Ambush order... Man, could it be devastating!

Yes, CC5 is pretty well balanced. I played only American side, and I didn't quite have a walk in the park winning the campaign. It wasn't CC3 difficult, but it was interesting. And yes, I do remeber losing couple of M-10 Wolverines at the beachead.
My favourite unit were the assault engineers with flamethrowers - Ambush order (when the Germans counterattack) and you're ready for the BBQ:)

It certainly was no walk in the park being German either. It was increadibly tough holding the beaches, though the paras were fairly easily dealt with.
Later the Allies would land force near Cherbourg. Not good if you have all the troops down by the beaches.
But if you lost the beaches the next line of defences were alsmost as good. Bunkers and hedgerows with a few houses too... Perfect ambushland.
My pref. for Ambush was to stick a unit of HMG and Rifles in a house or hedge that was on the avenue of attack. They could take out perhaps three squads with no losses if I had positioned them right, at the very least they would bog the enemy down for a considerable time letting me flank the attackers.
But one has to love putting Heavy Infantry with Panzerfausts on ambush along a road waiting for tanks. "Fsshhhh... BOOOM!" -1 tank. The same goes for the Panzerschrecks, they were just not any good against rifles.

CC2 German infantry was ridiculous. Panzerfausts were almost always a kill, given the volume of them even a unit of Reserve put up. Allied Armor was very vulnerable on some maps; playing as Germans was just "nuke tanks, mop up survivors" sometimes.
Infantry skirmishing was much more fun, though sometimes tanks survived for more than a minute.
So is the consensus that CC5 is the best one available. I'm inspired to have another go at this today as I have the day off work!
Even though the series is realistic, it's interesting that there are still things that aren't quite right - like the US AT guns, perhaps this is an attempt to balance the forces for game playability purposes?
