I, for instance, was i one instance given the task to get Damascus back (I held it, then the city revolted and the Seleucids took over). I was reluctant to attack, because the Seleucids had been a staunch ally during my war against Egypt, but somewhere along the line I had gifted them some 40,000 denarii, to avoid hitting the 50k threshold. So, when I had to get Damascus back I had to think up some way to get the Seleucids want to go to war with me, and I pestered them with a diplomat, asking for land to be handed over. And, surprise, they handed over Damascus on a silver platter, nice as you please. To use a quote: "Not exactly what I had in mind, but it will do". I wonder who´ll know where that line is from...
