Default How do I turn off the battle map timer

Im playing RTW...vanilla I guess...so is there a way to turn off the timer (hour glass thing)?

    1. I have searched the forum.
    2. the search for 'timer' gave me 4 pages...not one single thread said "how" to do it, the closest I got was someone mentioning that the method in another post didnt work...but none of the replies said how to do it
    3. the search for 'battle timer' was not any more helpful...
    4. I saw ALOT of posts mentioning all types of "mods" associated with turning off 'timers' and everything BUT NOT ONE SINGLE SIMPLE POST EXPLAINING HOW TO DO IT OR EVEN IF RTW CAN DO IT...

I apologize if this is the wrong...place to post the question...I don't even know what type of question this is (mod/single player/noobie)...too many rooms with too many standards to post...

So that's my question is there a way to turn off the timer in RTW? if so how(preferrably in NON techno jargon)...

    PS
outta curiosity does anyone know where this question should've gone?

The 'Battle Timer' option is right on the first screen when you are about to start a new campaign. Unfortunatly, it only affects that new campaign; it can't be changed mid-game.

It took me a week to find it when I started playing.

A savegame editor called RomeSage used to be able to toggle the battle timer (amongst other things), and it seems to have been updated for 1.5/1.6.

I'm sure battle timer in game options works even while playing a campaign. At least in version 1.5 so make sure you're patched up.

    Son Pacho,
Choose to toggle the timer carefully depending on WHERE you are playing. Ex: Will you most likely fight illusive missile cavs like the horse archers of the steppes then I´d defenitely recomend leaving the timer on. Otherwise you´ll be chasing them for hours. If you on the other hand have theese kind of cavs I´d defenitely leave the timer on. (Numidian miss cavs are also tricky)

    Thank you for the advice...

but err...ummm...I still dont know "HOW" to even turn the timer off...lol...

What I do know is that it is NOT an option at the begining of a New Campaign...it IS an option on Rome: Total Realism (but I'm not currently playing that-missed the Senate) but NOT on Rome: Total War

I also know that I didnt see it among the 'Options' on Rome: Total War...I saw all the keyboard shortcuts, etc but NOT an option to "toggle" the timer on/off

It is an option at the beginning of a new campaign in version 1.5 of RTW, and I think (not certain) in version 1.3.

If you are running Rome Total Realism, then when in RTW you might be in version 1.2 of RTW, which I do not think has the option to turn off the battle timer.

I could be incorrect about that, but I am sure someone here will correct me if that's the case.

Oh, and as to how- If you are in a version that supports the option, then when you select the difficulty levels of a new campaign, the battle timer option is a simple check box just below the difficulty levels.

Ok, so the question I should be asking is 'which version of RTW has the option to turn off the timer?' I guess I would need to go to the official CA site or something to get those patches?

I am pretty sure it was present in 1.2, and is still present in 1.5. Froggy's guide used to include a work-around for 1.1, but I think she removed it. If you haven't patched R:TW, I recommend you do so. The latest patches strongly improve the game, even though there still are some issues. To install patch 1.5, you need to have patch 1.3 installed first.

Incidentally, if you plan on using a mod in near future, it may be a good idea to make a back-up copy of the R:TW folder (with patch 1.2 installed for preference). It will save you the world of trouble with uninstalling and reinstalling R:TW, as most current mods still use 1.2.

back-up copy = 1)right click the RTW icon 2)click 'copy' 3)....is that the way to make a back-up copy?

then I should load 'patch 1.2(whichever)' onto the 'copied' RTW...

Is that the proper way to do it? Will this also give me the ability to play both RTR and RTW? It sounds like it should but I just want to make sure

Yes, that should work. It will take a while before the entire R:TW folder is copied, though. Also, you can install the official 1.2 patch only once and it will automatically install itself in the primary folder, so it is better to use a zipped version of 1.2 and unzip it in your back-up folder. You can find a zipped version at the Europa Barbarorum site (there should be one in the .Org download section, but I cannot find it). I make a copy of the back-up folder every time I install a mod.
