My brother is at uni and wants a PC game for his laptop. Just something for when he's bored.
Any ideas? It doesn't have to be a brand new game; I think he'd prefer an old game that is pretty fun. Something like Worms/Worms 2.
That totally depends on what kinds of games he likes. FPS? Strategy? RPG? Does he want something he can play for 30 mins and then put down or something that he'll play for hours at a time?
Despite my questions, I'll say Starcraft or Diablo II. Both seem to meet all your requirements pretty well.

He's not really a strategy, RPG or FPS gamer.
Mount and Blade - see the massive thread on it here. It's free to level 6. Best FPS-type combat in an RPG ever. Plus you can dip in and out of it easily (although it will probably suck him right in for a week or two instead).

I'd say a novelty game is best. Just something to keep him entertained in the spare hours that'll come along. Downloadable games are a no because he is on dial-up.

You heard the man, Craterus: Mount & Blade. Just use a download manager:
Star Downloader. :)

IMO the best novelty games are made by
Ambrosia. Unfortunately, most of their stuff is for the Mac, but there are a few they have ported to the PC. EV Nova is fabulous and Deimos Rising is a great classic-style shooter. You could also emulate a PowerMac to play the rest.
