Thread: Max poly count for unit models

Default Max poly count for unit models

Can anybody tell me what would be the maximum recommended polygon count for a unit model?

I've looked through all the mod question posts and wasn't able to find anything on this subject. I also used the google search as well.

Thanx in advance for any advice.

I'd recommend around 600-700 polys for a high detail model for the best performance.

    thank you very much Lusted.

damn, i'll have to make some sacrifices as i'm already nearly at 800, with a helmet, a shield, a weapon and 2 very detailed pauldrons to add...

how about if the unit has a low number of soldiers in the unit, like an elite unit, or like BI?

Could the number go as high as 800 - 900?

Yes, if it has a small number of troops in it. A way to compensate for high poly models is to have the sprites appear at shorter distances to reduce lag.

Remember, a good texture can compensate for poly's in sooo many ways..

    Thanks again guys!

Yep a good texture goes a long way...

Actually the texture for the torso and upper legs allowed me to save about 100 polygons compared to the rtw model i was referencing but the unit i am modelling has incredibly bumpy boots and arms so that surplus was eaten up.
