Time for it all to go back to STW

The creators, the new administrators of TW all have a vision ... to create something new for the TW fans. When in reality, most of those that were first drawn to the game simply desire a new adaption to it. Or. maybe i'm wrong.

Still, what I loved about STW was it's fairness (even if it did have a few glitches that the dishonorable used ... and Hello AMP), all units were evenly manned, one had a distinct number and style of unit to choose from - the same as the opponent. One had choices of to add honor, upgrades (remember the Super Ashi?) to weapons or armor - but it came down to having the same choices. It came down to testing what worked and what did not, it came down to everything was even but the General. It remains the most honest war game of all time, the most elaberate in its method of movement, and the real deal for those willing to experience TotalWar.

The present owners of the rights need to get back to the basics, and cease attempting to better the original - it simply can not be done.

Imagine! A new Shogun! A new TotalWar.

Puzz, I agree, but ... STW/MI is far superior to the crap being shoved down our throats today. If nothing else ... the equality of choice, the planning and method (s) are missing in todays renditions.

Why don't they simply go directly to WWI, and prove the futility of war. Period.

IMHO, the STW series atleast had honor - those that did not show respect to others were molified or ignored. Today, it simply does not matter. Something has been lost, and the community simply is not the same.

Still, it is just a game .... and getting a corporation (s) to understand the possibilities of creating a lasting venue of a series for a game maybe difficult for them to comprehend. Maybe in fact it is an impossibel deal. Then again, would you be willing to pay $20 a year to continue playing STW? Or, more?

I mean there are chumps out there creating "starwars" empires paying by the hour.

I would pay even more to have a nice comp with nice internet connection in 2000, and to be there from the beginninig... experiencing it all... even I get emotional about it.. I've only been year for 1,5 year or so...

I still play STW/WE, since it came out. I enjoy RTW, but my heart is still with STW. If only they would rebuild STW using RTW engine, I can only guess how that would be. Go figure!

You might want to watch the Ran no Jidai modification: it is looking better and better (I gabe the link to the TWC forum because it seems to be the hub of their activities, but you can also have a look at the .Org RnJ forum). I wouldn't get my hopes up for an official remake, though. The Sengoku Jidai is not exactly a well known or popular era, so few gamers will be interested in it.

Not a popular era? I think you are wrong. Previously it might not have been but it became popular when Shoggy was made. The game was cult, it was just that the battles took a long time to fight online (naturally so because a battle doesn't last 10 minutes), and people have busy lives so they cannot devote so much time to it. That I think was the main problem.

I could use some good old shogy. One thing I've always liked about shoggy is the darn simplicity of it unit-wise. Maybe a dozen units are in STW and it takes a month or so of light to moderate playing to get a really strong understanding of their uses but with all unit variety in MTW I still havin't gained the deep familiarity with the units that I had in STW. How do urban militia or militia sargets compare to almohod urban militia? I couldn't really say but the difference between a yari sam and yari ashigaru is easy. It feels more intimate in STW.
I've been thinking about starting a new mori or eusugi camp and posting pictures and story here.

Like most good things Shogun is a memory. Nothing is permanent Kafir m8 and as times change so do most other things. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing, memories are what make us who we are. All you can do now is remember how good it was because any attempt to re-live those times will only disappoint

I think it could be done on a small scale. The old style gameplay exists, but what's missing are players willing to embrace it. Too many players seem content with adopting inferior gameplay as their standard. We have recently seen several old time STW v1.12 vets coming back here, and they are being steered towards the inferior STW/MI v1.02. You won't find the old STW experience there. Most players dropped STW/MI v1.02 like a hot potato back in 2001.

When MTW came along I was in the middle of building a new PC. My old one could not handle MTW but I was not too bothered because, at the time I was enjoying the 103 Mod. It was a big improvement over v1.02 IMO and I was in no hurry to move on to MTW. However, that being said I would probably have to admit that my favourite ever online battle of any Total War was a v1.02 4v4 on Totomi, where myself and ShinGaijin gathered our battle weary troops for one last stand and won the day with an audacious charge by our depleted infantry and my one remaining unit of CA.
That will go down as my favourite but there were other excellent Shogun battles that stay in the mind, I can not say the same for MTW or RTW. I suspect that a lot of this is down to the fact that the whole online battle thing was a new experience. Whatever the reason, it was great fun....but now it is gone. Any new STW venture would be very small scale and would not transport me back to those times, too many people have moved on. As you stated, v1.02 is the most popular version and one that I played out of necessity rather than choice, so I always felt there was something missing on the few times I returned to STW/MI. I wholeheartedly understand Kafir's feelings and many is the time where I have wished that I could go back to that beautiful EA Lobby and enjoy the great times all over again. Sadly I do not think it would be possible. I really don't. It would be a pale immitation and this has no reflection on the current Shogun crowd.
I have this feeling too, that MTW II will not provide us with a better experience and that goes for any subsequent release, TW online has run its course IMO. I think we have had the best days

I haven't returned to STW yet, but I fondly remember fluid 5v5 games. That is what seems to have been lost in MP with RTW. I didn't get a chance to indulge in MTW MP, I assume the unit choices were do diverse to allow for even play.

I was quite impressed with the mod listed above, it looks nice but I don't know if the MP game would be up to the standard of STW.

Is this what we are after, balanced, realistic play with quick responses from a full field of 5v5? I can still remember the carnage and that some games lasted close to an hour and that wasn't because of lag.

You'd think the sprites woudlmake a comback and provide the ability to add a few more units per player with teh advance of technology?

Nice to see some activity on teh STW frant anyway, maybe I'll dig out the old disks and put it on the new machine. Its been a while and I'd enjoy playing what in all likelihood are probably the oldest and most honourable players int eh TW community. Remember the old honourable players website?

I can't stand folks with join dates of 2004-2006 spouting all kinds of spurious advice, some of them might be right but most don't have a clue.

They just don't know what STW was really like online. The musket wedgies, the monk rushers. It's all coming back.

No 5v5?. My memory was never good, but I could swear folks used to play 5v5. Yes, maybe it just felt like more with me trying to defend some patch of land against numerous groups.

That would be so awesome. I would love a revival of the old shogun simply because of its simplicity.
Maybe after MTW2 they will go back the "Age of the country at war" that would be awesome.

After being away for quite some time, I am very pleased to be back thanks to some greatly appreciated help from KukriKhan (bows). I recently purchased RTW/BI and was reminded of all I have been missing for almost two years now (two years?!?... doesn't seem possible)

But I digress... STW captured my imagination in ways no other game (TW or otherwise) had before. I agree completely with the posts above that speak to the equality and honour of the Original. But I feel I must add that, for me, it was much more.

STW was so rich and compelling. Before my exposure to it I had but a cursory interest in Shogun Japan. STW's depth inspired me to learn as much as I could. Since then I have read several books (including Musashi... a must for the SJ enthusiast), researched many of the histories, and added a score of films to my DVD collection. I am far from an expert, mind you, but I now hold a deep interest (dare I say passion?) for all things Samurai. Most do not take me seriously when I tell tham that a video game inspired my craving for SJ knowledge... but truthfully, I have STW to thank for it.

I, too, would love to see a re-birth for STW with the beautiful leaps in technology we have witnessed (most noteably in RTW). As lovely as the landscapes were before, I can only imagine how glorious a battlefield in Mimasaka would be now... with your castle set in the mountainside behind you, your troops' banners waving in the wind, your opponent across from you with nothing but anticipation and tension so thick you could cut it in between. It would be wonderous, to be sure.

That said, I also agree that it would be very hard indeed to replicate what brought us all here in the beginning. Perhaps it would be impossible... perhaps not. I know this though: were "STW II" to hit the shelves tomorrow I'd be in line for it! The very fact that we are here discussing it speaks volumes to the commitment STW fostered. Maybe that commitment will be rewarded one day with something we can all be honoured to share in.

Whatever the case, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of it then... and now. While it has not hooked me like the Original, RTW truly is a beautiful piece of work!

Sad to see things degenerate, but I've seen this time and time again in "games" forums. It's almost to be expected. That's the reason for my small number of posts, yet longevity on the boards. I try to avoid the acrimonious exchanges and just glean useful information and have a good time playing whatever game I'm interested at the moment.

I hope things improve.
