Just tell what your favorite band is and what type of music they play.
Mine is Blink 182 and they play Pop/Punk stuff.

Metallica hands down...especially pre-Black Album era, though I still enjoy Most of their stuff up to St. Anger (which I REALLY didn't like at all).

GARCIN: I "dreamt," you say. It was no dream. When I chose the hardest path, I made my choice deliberately. A man is what he wills himself to be.
INEZ: Prove it. Prove it was no dream. It's what one does, and nothing else, that shows the stuff one's made of.
GARCIN: I died too soon. I wasn't allowed time to - to do my deeds.
INEZ: One always dies too soon - or too late. And yet one's whole life is complete at that moment, with a line drawn neatly under it, ready for the summing up. You are - your life, and nothing else.

The Ramones - They INVENTED punk rock.
At the moment, I really like Embrace too.
Close run between Godspeed You! Black Emperor or Mogwai; since I've seen Mogwai live in a fantastic gig it'd edge towards them.

Embrace are ok, if only for the fact they come from my home town. (some of the songs aint bad either)

I would say that you are mistaken in your belief, sir. Although the above gentlemen had an indisputable influence upon what would be be punk rock, they are certainly not its progenitors.Originally Posted by InsaneApache

Currently I have two favorites, although I expect that to go up to three as soon as I can get ahold of some Floyd LP's:
Creedence Clearwater Revival- they play the best damn 50's and 60's rock and roll you'll ever hear, and some of the best blues.
Jimi Hendrix (more specifically, everything except his Band of Gypsies work): Jimi played... well, Jimi played Jimi. He was really sort of a genre of his own; even though his roots were easily fixed in Blues, noone ever played, or could play quite like him. Part of this was the fact that he also doubled as his own producer, to a certain extent, so what he wanted to be heard was what you heard.
I didn't say that, either.Originally Posted by JimBob

I would say that punk would have been nothing if it wasn't for the subculture. The Sex Pistols, Siouxse and the Banshees and the other groups from that scene would have defined punk, for all of their faults, and after the six-month run, punk truly did die.Originally Posted by JimBob

It is true that by the late summer of '77 the thing was dead. IMO the watershed was the Queens Silver Jubilee. 'We mean it man'. I also agree that in the UK the Pistols and to a lesser extent the Damned and the Clash were the motors driving the movement. It was always about more than the music. Attitude was just as important, and don't get me onto the clothes we wore. The number of times the coppers stopped me just because I wore a shirt with 'prison' arrows on it!!!![]()
Anyway back OT.
I can see how the Ramones would be a candidate for starting the US style of Punk. Indeed one of the first times I heard the word punk* (*a 16th century prostitute or a peice of driftwood haha) was in an NME article about Johnny, Joey, Dee Dee.
However, the case is they were following in the footsteps of other bands 3 chords tricks, or even 2 chords in Carbona not Glue.![]()
Proto punk bands such as the Stooges, MC5, the Velvet Underground, New York Dolls all paved the way for the mid 70's explosion we now call punk rock. In particular Lou Reed and Iggy Pop (little jimmy james) are quite rightly accorded the accolade of 'godfathers of punk'.
Their legacy lives on. No more boring old fart guitar solos.*eyes Pink Floyd* Before punk, most axemen were preening, posturing onanists, these days they are just onanists.![]()
They (Reed and Pop) stripped all the pretentiousness from rock and took it back to it's roots.
