All animals will thrive as far as they can to the exclusion of all else, as has previously been stated. Most animals have ecological niches, whereas humans have managed to adapt to thrive in many niches.

Oh, and lets not forget the number of different viruses. Yes, many kill the cells they infect, but many don't, and indeed many ancient ones may have helped in such matters as mammalian placentas and the immune system.

Mitochondria either have hitched a free ride, or have been subdugated by the host cell - possibly both.

The best pathogens don't kill their host. A dead host is not going to spread further, a weakened host will die. If the host is improved, well you can conquer the world!

SFTS - i understand what you mean about urban sprawl. I live in a pleasant village, and typically take my dog for walks along the old dirt roads that run through the countryside. Unfortunately, they went and built three big houses near one of the usable dirt roads. In the process they paved over part of the dirt road, removing it's charm and stopping water going through the dirt, so it all runs to the bottom of the hill creating small floods, and the townies who have moved into the new houses drive horrible big "SUV's", and if i'm walking my dog and get in the way, they honk their horn at me. Arrogant gits.

If i had it my way, their sodding houses would be torn down, their cars clamped, and they'd be deported back to the cities.

Where my dad grew up his house was at the edge of the town in a house called "faraway" (guess why...) There was a dirt road to the centre of town.

Now: 6 lane road to the centre of town.
4 lane road over the river
4 lane road to another town
Used to be one estate, now upwards of 8, and they're still building.
Local swimming pool is now a supermarket (land given to the town was sold to developers).

But where do new houses go? Obviously everyone's a NIMBY (Not In My back Yard), but that solves nothing.

In a free society does the government get to stop others affecting what you percieve as to be how the place should be. Is this the case where Americans although loving freedom and democracy still feel that no one is allowed to touch things near their land. Talk about double standards!!!

I would recommend buying the land so that others cannot “sprawl” into it. If that’s too pricy for ya perhaps you could go to the city council and zoning board meetings.

A local fella tried that , he bought up all the road frontage near his house so he couldn't get neighbours to disturb his peace , developers bought up all the "agricultural" land (rock and bog) behind him and bought some road frontage 3 miles behind him , now the housing estates are right behind his narrow strip of property .
Though why all those people want to live West of the river is beyond my comprehension , stupid muppets waste hours every day sitting in traffic trying to get to and from work across one of the 3 usable bridges .
