How to recruit General's Bodyguard reinforcements?

I've tried the search function, and unless its documented in the long bug-fix thread, I can't find an answer.. Im playing a long long Greek campaign and as my General bodyguard numbers dwindle from combat, I am not able to retrain reinforcements for them, even in heavy cavalry capable cities (hippodrome?). Anyway, I'd appreciate the answer, Im stumped :(

Generals unit will replenish over three turns. But its overall size is influenced by various factors..mainly personal security and influence.
