Secondary Weapons Pointless?

I was using some Parthian Zrahda Pahlavas (The Cataphract) and I was pitting them against Hellinistic Cataphractoi in a custom battle. After 4 runs the Pahlava units always killed about 40 of the 50 enemy cataphracts. Next out of curiosity I tested thier mace on the cataphracs figuring it would be the perfect weapon to defeat them (AP vs. A unit based around its armor). To my surprise they killed from 15-20 and lost every time where as without the maces they were winning almost all the time. Next I tried Kappocodian Cavalry against the 2nd Level Cavalry from Ptolemics (Sorry I forgot the name they have almost identical stats). After trying the spear I got around 30 - 35 kills next I tried there battle axes and to my dismay they killed 15- 20 which seems to render their side weapons utterly pointless. I was just wondering if this was known or if it was done on purpose.

They're pretty useless as of now, but once we finish porting to 1.5 and finally have a charge stat that works lances will be for charging and secondary weapons for melee.
