what effect do the stars a general have do to the units?

i fought against genearls with 7 stars with me only having a 1 star general or only a captain and won those battles easy. the enemy routed quick, even troops with high morale have routed quick.

on the other hand i fought peasants with high morale with sassanids cavalry and lost. it was like running into a brickwall.

in MTW i could hardly win against a 8 star general with a 4 star general.

I think it increases morale and also makes auto-resolve better for high star general. If you fight it out yourself, I think the higher the command the larger his radius of morale boosting field.

"Cry, the beloved country, for the unborn child that is the inheritor of our fear. Let him not love the earth too deeply. Let him not laugh too gladly when the water runs through his fingers, nor stand too silent when the setting sun makes red the veld with fire. Let him not be moved when the birds of his land are singing, nor give too much of his heart to a mountain or a valley. For fear will rob him of all if he gives too much."
