Default Woman charged in pit bull attack

Hooray for Ontario for putting some teeth (pun intended) into laws aimed at irresponsible dog owners.

Hopefully this woman ends up in a whole heap of doo-doo...

    STAFF REPORTER THESTAR.COM

A 29-year-old woman is facing two charges stemming from a pit bull attack in which another dog and its owner were mauled.
The dog, a Shih Tzu, was killed in the Feb. 14 attack, police said today.
The attack occurred in the Kingston Rd. and Midland Ave. area.
A woman was walking her pit bull, but it was not on a leash and was not muzzled, in violation of the the Dog Owner's Liability Act.
Police say the pit bull rushed the Shih Tzu, prompting the owner to pick his dog. But the attacking dog was still able to get at the animal and kill it.
The man suffered arm and leg wounds, police said.
Terra Christina Barnett, 29, of Toronto has been charged with unlawfully causing bodily harm, and common nuisance. She had a court appearance on the weekend.

Certainly a much better solution than banning pitbulls altogether- go after the irresponsible owners.

That's flat out negligent, imo. If you're going to walk your dog without a leash, you'd better be prepared to pay the consequences if it attacks someone.

for some reason when i was a kid gorwing up in texas, i was always under the impression that if a minor broke the law it was the parents that were punished. i see this happening for dog owners but not for parents and their renegade kids any more. [distant tangent]

I can only assume that this was in Toronto; I didn't hear about it. A whole lot of people around here are angry at the ban against pit bulls, though.

There should be a ban on Shih Tzus.

I can't really disapprove of killing Shih Tzus, but it's neat that the owner of the pit is being held responsible. When I release the hounds to drive off and maim the curious, I realize that I will have to pay bribes to local authorities when the "parents" go wailing to the local "authorities" with their "mauled children" and "hospital bills for reconstructive surgery." But that's okay. I can live with that.

Perhaps this is case of just that. The lady may have just been out with her pit bull protecting the streets from marauding Shih Tzus. We just don't know...

While I can't disapprove of killing toy dogs, the pit bull should have been on a leash and it is only right that the owner is held responsible and charged as if she comitted the offence.
