they've got stripes running down their noses...that's never normally there

That's actually pretty typical for some skins, either the skin or the UV mapping is slightly off, leading to those joins at the edges of the texture that provides the skin. I call it flash - from the old extra plastic you got around molded models - don't know what anyone else calls it.
