    In my experience, as I have several female friends who play games such as this, and one who is a high-profile game developer, many women who do play such games see themselves as "gamers" and not "girls," and hate to be treated differently than male gamers. Thus, they tend to avoid threads such as this like the plague, as these are generally populated with teenage boys (and I don't need to extend the explanation further).

    My wife played RTW quite a bit; she's rather busy with her lab-work at present though and has not got around to giving EB a go yet.

    There are more male than female wargamers around, for both computer and miniature wargames, but they do exist. As khelvan noted, most of them don't really like being considered for their novelty value.

    Hmmm.... That's kind of a shame. Girls can and often do think differently than boys and can provide criticism and advice on things about game design that men wouldn't notice and vice versa. If there are girls playing EB the very fact that they are girls might mean that they have a different perspective on a variety of issues and details in the mod that may be constructive to all parties involved.

    I don't think you got the point of my post. It isn't that they try not to be different; everyone is different. However, they don't like to be -treated differently-. There is a difference.

    There are a few female posters/players over at the RTR boards (and I know at least one of them has visited here/TWC before ) and I know a couple of female gamers personally (hell, I got one of them hooked on Unreal Tournament!) but that doesn't quite answer the question...

    The last time I played EB when my girlfriend was around she stole the keyboard when I got up for a second... and then ran into my bedroom and locked the door. Well, I didn't want to negotiate so I tried playing EB for awhile without a keyboard which didn't work too well... and then decided not to argue at all and grabbed a coffee and read the paper at the diner down the street. From then on, I decided to buy a second keyboard and mouse to keep hidden from her sight, just in case such an incident occurs again.

    Just finished watching The Notebook with my girlfriend... *tear* I'm feeling a little verklempt... talk amongst yoursleves... here's a topic; Rhode Island is neither a road nor an island... discuss....

    Ehem... oh, right right, girls and EB. Well, she doesn't really play EB so much as enjoys when I tell her of my conquests and such. She even bought me a sword : )

    I actually didn't think that this was funny.

    I know that my original post was not very well worded (it was late, I had a few jars inside me) but the question was actually a serious one, perhaps best recast as, Why is it that a game like EB appeals primarily to males? My wife in fact enjoys some computer games like Myst but thinks EB is dull (and doesn't like it when I spend too much time playing). Our 12 year old daughter loves RTW but only ever plays battles (she loves elephants) and finds my campaigns boring. I have to let her fight any really interesting battles on hand (she won't do sieges, and she's not too keen on her homework either). My son (eight) likes to play EB when I do but only if I tell him stories about the people involved- he thinks the battles are dull but is willing to hang around and annoy his sister with bad advice. That strange little family dynamic got me to wondering if there were any other female perspectives on RTW/EB or on history in general. Despite liking battles (the bloodier the better), my girl is not interested in the historical context or the impact that such battles did actually have on the course of human history. Now, fair enough she's only twelve but I did wonder, for example, if there are any women involved with the dev team. Not really any of my business and no-one has to answer if they don't want to.

    So, Baldwin et al, if you think the thread is spurious, say so, or better yet just don't reply. Leave the adultfriendfinder stuff out of it, please. My girl was actually quite excited to see if there were any others like her (of course there are not; she is unique).

    Frogbeastegg was a member of the EB team way back when it first started, but she has since lost interest. We get occasional help from a German archaeologist/historian/museum curator. We had at least one female gamer posting over in our TWC forum presence.

    The standpoint of our contributors, male or female, is not different. We are all attempting to understand and relate history, so in this respect we're all the same.

    My 11 year old niece likes the custom battles as long as she has elephants.

    The only women that would play games like this would be amazingly overweight and would probably at some point eat their moniters if they got overly exited by what they were seeing on screen, which is expected of fat people.

    Pretty girls play stupid games like magical bubble ponys magical pony bubble adventure in wonderland, or the sims2.

    So my point is, I don't think there are many girls here.

    I actually once saw a pretty good looking girl that played FPS games, but so far I've never seen a pretty girl playing strategy games of any kind...
